Quantcast

For today's entry into 31 Days of Halloween 2014, we have something different - something not intended to be today's entry. In fact, TOTE-EMS MONSTER PLUSH came from out of the shadows and onto my radar via one of the darkest, most sinister places on the internet: Kickstarter. Now, I don't cover a lot of crowdfunding projects anymore (please, read this before submitting), but once in a rare while, something strikes me... or in this case, sinks its fangs in like a vampire's bite. It's a project perfectly-launched in time for Halloween, and one with a ton of potential. Toy designer David Murphy (a 15-year pro who's worked on a ton of Disney licenses including a little property called FROZEN) has created over 100 characters for his Tote-ems line, complete with full backstories for each. These little creatures have stretchy arms, a snapping function, and are ready to go wherever kids are. Watch the video below and let David give you the full scoop...

Some say that "Life is Better in Costume," and those who adhere to that mantra are, indeed, correct.  It's fun to play dress-up, and fostering imaginative play with my girls is something that I've spoken of often here on THE ROCK FATHER. But you don't have to be a kid to play dress-up, and the legions of cosplayers and casual fans that gear-up for comic-cons and special events year-round are a testament to that. And, so what if Halloween is still two weeks away? There's nothing that says a grown man can't hit the town dressed as Batman (just ask Ben Affleck, who's been roaming Detroit along with Henry Cavill shooting BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE), to the surprise, delight, and in some cases, confusion of those whom he may encounter. That's why this month, THE BATROCKFATHER BEGINS RISES.

There's a very slight chance that you might be having deja vu right now, as I did include the longform music video for PRODUCT OF HATE's THE UNHOLY MANIPULATOR in last year's 31 Days of Halloween. Reason it's back? I directed and edited the video, and it just became an Official Selection of the 2014 Open Wound Horror Film Festival, which means that those attending the Santa Fe Comic-Con next weekend will get a chance to see it on the big screen. When we filmed this, we'd always hoped that it would become something of a "perennial favorite" for each Halloween season, and that looks to be happening. After all, it's got some fairly horrific elements, and since I do run a family site, I wouldn't recommend this one for viewing around kids or at work (unless you work somewhere really cool).

Funny enough, I've been doing my annual 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER for eighteen days now, and today of all days, I didn't have an entry scheduled. While I may have goofed, the internet Gods shined upon me this evening with an out-of-the-darkness email from a rep for Chicago band, COMMON SHINER, pointing me in the direction of their new music video, "Social Mediasochist." Imagine for a moment that the John Hughes-inspired world of NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE was placed in a blender with every slasher film from about 1980 'til now. See what the students of Wes Craven's Slasher High School are up to in the new video, directed by Zoran Gvojic of Lowcarbcomedy...

31 Days of Halloween: TOY STORY of TERROR!

Last year, Disney•Pixar’s TOY STORY OF TERROR! found Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and a whole bunch of familiar friends from the TOY STORY movies in a new and precarious situation when it made it's debut on ABC. This year, TOY STORY OF TERROR! slides into 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER, thanks to a fantastic home release on Blu-Ray + Digital HD Combo Pack (and standalone DVD), making this modern Halloween tradition available year-round.

31 Days of Halloween: JAZZY ASH - "Monsters"

Way back in February, I'd already locked-down an entry for 2014's 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER when I reviewed HOME, the latest album from JAZZY ASH. "Monsters" follows the New Orleans flavor of HOME, presenting a playful take on what exactly "monsters" are. Is that a zombie, or just a shadow? Is that some sinister creature in the corner, or just a pile of laundry? Is that the demon tree from POLTERGEIST outside? Nope, just your neighbor's weeping willow. Stream the track below, or grab it on iTunes as a fine addition to your 2014 Halloween Music Playlist!
