It's not quite spring, and already I'm writing about fall. Not a huge stretch seeing as Halloween is my favorite holiday (followed by Christmas), and while we've got a full two seasons to go until the return of autumn colors and pumpkin spice, the folks at Papercutz just sent over a look at what's lurking ahead. New Tales from the Crypt, a Scrooge McDuck x Star Wars "Great Parody," a relaunch of Gumby and new volumes of Trolls and Barbie aside, there's werewolves, ghosts, dinosaurs and even a very modern spin on some classic monsters. Check it out...

Updated 1/23/2017 with the official commercial for the Dads Who Play Barbie campaign. This goes bigger than just "play kits": I didn't know it until becoming The Rock Father™, but there's few things better than father-daughter playtime. While our girls have many interests, the classics are always a part of things, and Barbie dolls have been a part of the mix for a few years now. I used to play Barbie with my sister as kids back in the 80s, so getting into it again as a dad wasn't a big stretch. A few years back, I even tracked-down a "new old stock" Barbie and the Rockers "Hot Rockin' Stage" to really bridge the generations (read about that here). Now comes news that for other dads like myself, Mattel just launched a collection of #DadsWhoPlayBarbie Play Kits - "curated to celebrate the special bond between a girl and her dad."

Back when Barbie first started "moving in" here at Rock Father HQ a few years back, one of the first vehicles we bought the girls for their dolls was a "remote controlled" Barbie Corvette. For whatever reason, that car, along with nearly every RC car we've ever found made specifically for dolls has been what's known as "simple RC" - they go forward, but they only turn in reverse. Now comes what I believe is the first-ever full-function RC to be an official Barbie product. Created by Toy State under license from Mattel, the Barbie Cruisin' Convertible Corvette is available exclusively at Toys 'R' Us this holiday season, and is a featured pick in my 2016 Holiday Wish Guide!

I've said it before, but "space" is hot right now, and for a kid that grew up in the Shuttle-era with movies like SPACE CAMP and countless other sci-fi adventures in regular rotation, it's been fantastic to see The Rock Daughters be so inquisitive and excited for outer-space adventures. Fueled by the likes of STAR WARS, MILES FROM TOMORROWLAND, THE FLOOGALS and READY, JET, GO!, the kids have become enthralled with space, and it's obvious that they're not alone as even the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES recently went into orbit, and now BARBIE is getting into the action. Mattel has launched an entire line of toys based on BARBIE: STAR LIGHT ADVENTURE (I already bought the girls a few of the dolls), the latest CGI animated feature created in partnership with Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Coming to Blu-ray and DVD on September 13th, Fathom Events, Mattel and Women's Forum will bring BARBIE: STAR LIGHT ADVENTURE to the big screen for one day only, Saturday, July 30th, 2016, complete with an exclusive introduction from Barbie PLUS deleted scenes and bonus content, a special interview with a NASA astronaut, and the “Firefly” and “Shooting Star” music videos with lyrics so you can sing along! Check out the trailer and details below, then click here to get tickets via Fandango!

Big News for Barbie as "The Doll Evolves"

I'm a big fan of the icons, but sometimes even the most established brand comes to a point where evolution is an absolute necessity. For Mattel's BARBIE line, evolution is something perhaps long-overdue - a result of changing times and ideals, and even Mattel admits (in a video on TIME) that today's announcement comes partially-rooted in what's most important to shareholders - sales have been slumping, and something had to be done. For the past two years, in a time when Barbie has gone through much scrutiny, behind-the-scenes a team of around 20 people at Mattel were hard at work on a secret initiative called "Project: Dawn." The result is the biggest change in Barbie ever - a new line of Fashonistas that feature 4 body types (three new: Curvy, Tall and Petite), 7 skin tones, 22 eye colors, 24 hairstyles, and countless on-trend fashions and accessories. Take a look at the introductory video...

Preview: BARBIE in ROCK 'N ROYALS

It was three years ago that Mattel's BARBIE in PRINCESS AND THE POPSTAR arrived, and ever since, The Rock Daughters™ have been awaiting a sequel. Addie was so into it that I actually bought her a vintage, unopened BARBIE AND THE ROCKERS "Hot Rockin' Stage" from 1985 (and did a full feature here), and that 2012 film and toys are still regular staples. Now comes BARBIE in ROCK 'N ROYALS - not a proper sequel, but it might as well be. Think PRINCESS AND THE POPSTAR meets CAMP ROCK, and you've got the gist. The new movie is out September 8th from Universal, and the toys are hitting stores now. Preview below...
