Each year around this same time, some old friends emerge from their crypt, ready to haunt the breakfast table once more...

The General Mills Monster Cereals have been a staple of Halloween season breakfast for over four decades, and I've been a fan for nearly as long. Funny enough, I have yet to see them "in the wild" this season, but I know that Franken Berry, Boo Berry and Count Chocula are out there, and when I do finally come across a glorious display of their demonic deliciousness, I will likely drop to my knees in respect (as I always do) as their boxes reflect an imaginary glow akin to the mysterious briefcase in PULP FICTION. Despite my lack of finding fresh stock at retail thus far, the folks at General Mills had a special package dropped off here at Rock Father HQ - a "Monsters Across America" mystery box, you could say. Being that 2016 is an election year, the trio of monsters (sadly their lesser-known counterparts, Yummy Mummy and Frute Brute are AWOL again) are running for office - and they truly want your vote, but their position is that of America's Favorite Cereal Monster.  Earlier today, Finley and I jumped on Facebook Live to do an unboxing of the package, and now an edited version can be viewed below...

General Mills Monster Cereals

When it comes to deliciously-demonic munchies and sinfully-sweet snacks, there's no better time of year than Fall to get my supernatural groove on. I'm a huge fan of General Mills' Monster Cereals - so much that I've written about them every Halloween for nearly a decade, with at least six posts appearing right here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine. When Count Chocula®, Boo Berry® and Franken Berry® emerge from their Crypt, it's cause for celebration - a true throwback to my own childhood growing up in the late 70s/early 80s! The difference is that now I'm enjoying them with a family of my own, and my love of these cereals goes beyond breakfast. They can be used as fun snacks, and sometimes it's totally acceptable to play with your food... or just the box it came in.

Since at least 2008, I've been writing about the General Mills Monster Cereals every Fall, and since 2011 or so, I've done so right here on THE ROCK FATHER. Last year, General Mills finally caved in and took my advice, not only issuing COUNT CHOCULA, FRANKEN BERRY and BOO BERRY in Retro boxes exclusive to TARGET stores (I have a set of empty boxes here in my office), but they also brought FRUTE BRUTE and YUMMY MUMMY back from the dead. For 2014, the news comes a bit earlier than usual (this post's been on my "to-do list" since last week), but the General Mills Monsters are back - bringing back the core trio, but sadly the Mummy and the Brute are staying in the Crypt again this year. This year's exciting news is that General Mills has finally dumped the embarrassing CGI depictions of the characters that have been featured on the mass-market boxes for a few years, instead bringing forth new versions crafted by the skilled team at DC Comics. Let's take a look...

My love for the General Mills Monster Cereals is well-documented. This year, I may have even taken credit for their return to retro-style packaging at Target (I didn't, but I have requested this each Fall since 2008, and in 2013 it actually happened), and while it's been a joy to introduce my children to Daddy's love of COUNT CHOCULA, BOO BERRY, FRANKEN BERRY, FRUTE BRUTE, and FRUITY YUMMY MUMMY, this year I went beyond simply eating the cereal dry. Having not had a glass of milk since 1989, I returned to eating cereal proper with Silk Pure Almond Original Almondmilk... and the kids and I turned our Monster Cereals into some tasty treats - one of which is a quick-and-easy snack to make for your Halloween parties this week: General Mills' Monster Cereal Munch!

Every Fall since 2008, I have written about my love for the General Mills Monster Cereals. No matter where those words have been penned, I have always included one, simple request for General Mills... a request that I included last September, right here on The Rock Father: Bring back the "Retro" Boxes.  I'm a Monster Cereal fiend... so much so that I still have a dwindling private stash from last year, and when I tweeted about that stash while munching some BOO-BERRY back on August 5, this happened...

Last month, I made my love of the General Mills Monster Cereals quite clear when I celebrated their return to stores for another season of frightfully-fantastic breakfast delights. Now that we're almost at the end of October, it would feel wrong to leave the boys out of 31 Days of Halloween here on The Rock Father, so for Day 27 we're turning back the clock to take a look at the first appearances of Count Chocula and Franken Berry and Boo Berry. I tend to think that my daughters will never have such an emotional attachment to a line of breakfast cereals...
