Quantcast

A long time ago at a breakfast table far, far away...

I was a kid who enjoyed the days of cereal with cool "prizes," many of which were fueled by my interests of the time. One such interest? STAR WARS. As a parent, I'm doing my best to make sure that The Force is strong with my daughters, and when General Mills started putting STAR WARS pens in boxes of cereal last year, we scored a couple - and R2-D2 was a big hit. Now, they're doing it again, with STAR WARS pens included in specially-marked boxes of Big G Cereals through the end of the year, complimented online by CEREAL WARS: THE EDIBLE EPISODES. Since we've got a couple of years to wait until Disney releases J.J. Abrams' STAR WARS: EPISODE VII for big screen, how about some small screen action? I even made an Edible Episode of my own...

My love for the General Mills Monster Cereals is well-documented. This year, I may have even taken credit for their return to retro-style packaging at Target (I didn't, but I have requested this each Fall since 2008, and in 2013 it actually happened), and while it's been a joy to introduce my children to Daddy's love of COUNT CHOCULA, BOO BERRY, FRANKEN BERRY, FRUTE BRUTE, and FRUITY YUMMY MUMMY, this year I went beyond simply eating the cereal dry. Having not had a glass of milk since 1989, I returned to eating cereal proper with Silk Pure Almond Original Almondmilk... and the kids and I turned our Monster Cereals into some tasty treats - one of which is a quick-and-easy snack to make for your Halloween parties this week: General Mills' Monster Cereal Munch!

Every Fall since 2008, I have written about my love for the General Mills Monster Cereals. No matter where those words have been penned, I have always included one, simple request for General Mills... a request that I included last September, right here on The Rock Father: Bring back the "Retro" Boxes.  I'm a Monster Cereal fiend... so much so that I still have a dwindling private stash from last year, and when I tweeted about that stash while munching some BOO-BERRY back on August 5, this happened...

Last month, I made my love of the General Mills Monster Cereals quite clear when I celebrated their return to stores for another season of frightfully-fantastic breakfast delights. Now that we're almost at the end of October, it would feel wrong to leave the boys out of 31 Days of Halloween here on The Rock Father, so for Day 27 we're turning back the clock to take a look at the first appearances of Count Chocula and Franken Berry and Boo Berry. I tend to think that my daughters will never have such an emotional attachment to a line of breakfast cereals...

Earlier this evening, acting on an anonymous tip, I was able to track down some old friends. Practically hidden on the bottom two shelves of an endcap deep within a local drug store, there they were: Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry - the General Mills Monster Cereals. Missing from the breakfast landscape for nearly a year, this trio of spooky delights has returned once more. Like the changing colors of the leaves and the cool autumn air, there's just some things you can always count on, and the arrival of the Monsters ranks among the best.
