Get ready for a PJ MASKS Halloween!

"It had been a night not unlike any other... a band of brave heroes, heading out into the darkness ready to face off against fiendish villains to stop them from messing with your day. Indeed, while millions enjoyed a night full of restful sleep, three children would once again be responsible for saving the day... proving definitively that night time is the right time to fight crime. Amaya becomes Owlette... Connor becomes Catboy... and Greg becomes Gekko... the colorful trio known as the PJ MASKS hitting the streets in search of adventure, while serving-up swift justice to wrongdoers. After leaving HQ and discovering that Night Ninja had gone missing, the PJ Masks would soon find that their biggest foe, that marvel of mechanical mischief, Romeo, had completed his most impressive creation yet, the Growy Uppy Machine - a tool able to turn any child into an adult for a small bit of time. Slowed by Luna Girl's sinister Moths, Gekko and Catboy had their hands full, leaving Owlette to face Romeo alone, after he had tested the Growy Uppy Machine... on himself!"

If you've paid a visit to the "action" aisles of your local toy retailer recently, there's a solid chance that you've seen MARVEL'S ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: WEB WARRIORS Toys. The folks at Hasbro have been rolling these out since the spring, and we've actually got quite a few of them here at Rock Father HQ - several of which were featured a few months back in an episode of UNBOXED. But now we're in summer, and with summer comes a ton of role-play fun... the kind that's quite fitting for a #SummerOfMarvel. With Addie on an adventure of her own (truth: she was napping), Little Finn and I went outside to take a look at what Hasbro had bestowed upon us...

More than five years into my gig as a parent, every day is still an incredible thing as my wife and I watch our girls learn and grow, while embracing both their creative side and thirst for adventure. We do a lot of arts and crafts here at Rock Father HQ, all of which reflect our girls' diverse interests. We've gone full-blown Royal, making countless Princess Wands and Tiaras... have gone to Outer Space with planets and spacecraft... have worked with wax, paper, felt, glue and a ton of glitter over the years. Last week, during one of our school-canceling "cold days" (not a "snow day," but a -40° windchill) my oldest and I dug into something new - an activity kit from Seedling, a New Zealand-based company that's just started hitting the U.S. in a big way after merging with P.S. XO in a move that brought Seedling Founder/CEO Phoebe Hayman together with partners Kara Nortman and Soleil Moon Frye (who I watched regularly as Punky Brewster when that show was new). Their toys and kits tap into something that I've discussed many times over the years - letting kids be kids, and letting them play with what they want and follow their own interests. The kit that Addie and I worked on played right into her heroic side... a chance to design her own superhero cape. While I was there for a little fine-tuning with the scissors and glue, she really didn't need me, as the outcome was all her.

The Rock Father is a 2014 BuyCostumes.com #OrangeTuesday Halloween Ambassador.

Some say that "Life is Better in Costume," and those who adhere to that mantra are, indeed, correct.  It's fun to play dress-up, and fostering imaginative play with my girls is something that I've spoken of often here on THE ROCK FATHER. But you don't have to be a kid to play dress-up, and the legions of cosplayers and casual fans that gear-up for comic-cons and special events year-round are a testament to that. And, so what if Halloween is still two weeks away? There's nothing that says a grown man can't hit the town dressed as Batman (just ask Ben Affleck, who's been roaming Detroit along with Henry Cavill shooting BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE), to the surprise, delight, and in some cases, confusion of those whom he may encounter. That's why this month, THE BATROCKFATHER BEGINS RISES.

Holiday Gift Guide 2014I'm all about harnessing the power of imagination, and when new ways to do that pop-up, I'm always interested. Dress-up play is a big deal here at Rock Father HQ, and one recent element comes from Bleacher Creatures, who have rolled out Princess Tiara and Wand Sets, along with Superhero Capes for a variety of Major League Baseball Teams - and some NBA, NHL, NFL and collegiate crews as well. They're affordably-priced and make great gifts. We have this Chicago White Sox collection from the MLB here at Rock Father HQ... Dress-up + Imaginative Play + Sports all rolled into one!

Here's a little food for thought: Halloween is less than three months away. In fact, September 2 is "Orange Tuesday," which is the kick-off to Halloween (think of it as a spookier Black Friday), and if your family is thinking of getting in on the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES action, now is the time to do it. Regardless of Halloween coming soon, I'm always preaching the Gospel of dress-up and imaginative play, and with a few weeks left before Back-to-School, there's plenty of time to let the imagination run wild, and when it comes to TMNT, my friends at BuyCostumes.com are getting all the new styles in - not only for kids, but for grownups, too! They've even got styles from both the Nickelodeon animated series and the new Paramount Pictures live-action film. Personally, I could see both of my offspring running around fighting evildoers in those girls TMNT tutu sets they're selling. Preview some of the new styles below...
