If you're reading this midday on May 13, 2013... just know that I'm currently sitting in the aisle seat of a Boeing 737 en route to Miami. Thanks to internet magic, The Rock Father website continues posting new content even when I'm away, and that's just another example of technology at it's finest. This week's adventure is taking me to the PBS Annual Meeting. It's my first trip 'as' "The Rock Father" - and only the third time since becoming a parent nearly four years ago that I've actually gone away on business... or been away from my family.
If you've logged into Facebook or Twitter today, you probably know what today is. Yes, it's International STAR WARS Day (May the Fourth Be With You!), but being the first Saturday in May, it's also FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. Last year was the first year I'd blogged about FCBD here on The Rock Father, and some of you might recall that it was pretty disappointing. FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2013? The complete opposite - it was excellent. It also started a little bit early...
On Friday night, I took the girls on a special adventure... an adventure that was really for Addie since Finn is only 10 months old. We hopped in the car late that afternoon and went to meet up with my wife at her office. While it was exciting to surprise her as she spotted us in the parking lot, the real surprise was waiting in Elmhurst, Illinois... a Chicago suburb that should be about an hour from Rock Father HQ, but thanks to Friday "rush-hour" took about two to reach. I kept the little one guessing the whole way there... "Where are we going for our special adventure, Daddy?" And then we arrived at the Elmhurst YMCA.
Last year, after living together for 14 years, I learned something disturbing about my wife that had somehow never emerged... She doesn't like Scooby-Doo. This came as a real surprise to me, as I'd been known to wear the occasional Scooby t-shirt over the years, but I guess we'd never really discussed it before. Too bad for my wife, since thanks to Cartoon Network and a certain 36-year-old 3½-year-old (Addie), Scooby-Doo makes frequent appearances here at Rock Father HQ.
Just over 31 years ago (November 28, 1981 to be exact), my parents took me to the Chicago Stadium for something special. The "World Premiere Edition" of WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS' WORLD ON ICE promised "a whole new concept in live and in person entertainment for every member of the family." It delivered on that promise, becoming forever a part of my most cherished childhood memories.
We're officially one week into the New Year, but Christmas isn't quite finished. My Mom had mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I should write something about "Six Christmases," and while I didn't think I would, here I am doing it in January. For my little ones, Holiday 2012 brought Six Christmases. We've got five down and one to go. This blog entry is geared largely for our family to get a look at our December.
