SECRET AGENT 23 SKIDOO dropped his new album, THE PERFECT QUIRK this week, so what else did he do? He dropped himself... and a copy of the new album on CD... from an airplane at 13,000 feet. The premiere purveyor of Kid-Hop recently took part in my #RockFathersDay Series here on THE ROCK FATHER, throwing down some parenting wisdom and thoughts on music ahead of the new release. Check that out here, and watch Cactus make his historic jump below...
"I was a wild 25 year-old musician, free and crazy, and it hit me like a ton of bricks to the gut," explains SECRET AGENT 23 SKIDOO while recalling the moment he discovered that he'd soon become a father for the first time. "You wanted honesty, right?," he continues, reflecting on twelve years of parenting ahead of Rock Father's Day 2014, and the June 24th release of his latest album of family-friendly funk, THE PERFECT QUIRK. Like many fellow "Rock Fathers" (myself included), the undisputed king of "Kid-Hop" may have been on a different path in the beginning, but it all came together. He continues, "I told my soon-to-be-wife that as long as she was down with being with a musician, 'cause I wasn't gonna change, that I would be the best father and husband i could possibly be. As soon as she accepted that instantly, I knew we'd all be alright."
Twice in the past month this has happened to me - that uneasy feeling when a new album arrives by one of your favorite artists and doesn't manage to live up to expectations. It always puts me in that weird spot where I almost don't want to say anything at all, if only because I don't want unfamiliar listeners to avoid giving other albums from an artist's back (or future) catalog a spin... but then there's just the reality that as a reviewer, I have to do the same thing I've done in varying capacities since 1992, and lay it out - tell it like it is, and offer up my opinion. After all, as PRIMUS once said, "they can't all be zingers."
Mark your calendars, because June 24, 2014 is already looking like a great day, as news officially arrived that Underground Playground Records will release THE PERFECT QUIRK, the fourth studio album from SECRET AGENT 23 SKIDOO (one of my favorite artists on the kindie scene). The "King of Kid Hop" is declaring this "The Year of the Weird!" as he preps not only a new record, but also the "soft" launch of his literary debut, WEIRDO CALHOUN AND THE ODD MEN OUT (officially releasing on September 23).
MAKE BELIEVERS is a massive record. As I mentioned a month or so ago when the album announcement was posted here on The Rock Father, the little one and I have been spinning the new album from SECRET AGENT 23 SKIDOO here at HQ for awhile now. It's another one of those special albums that warranted holding back the review until release date was almost upon us, simply because you need to remember to buy this. Why? Because I'll throw down some info in the first paragraph that you'd normally have to read on for: This is a 5-Star Record.
