25 Days of Xmas: My Little Pony - A Very Minty Christmas

Written by

Having been originally released back in 2005, MY LITTLE PONY: A VERY MINTY CHRISTMAS is a movie that my wife and I missed the first time around - coming long after our own childhood, but about four years prior to us becoming parents ourselves. Released on DVD by Shout! Factory Kids for 2013 as part of their MY LITTLE PONY "Classic Movies" Collection, I sat down to watch it with my four-year-old daughter, and today it makes my annual 25 Days of Xmas countdown here on The Rock Father.

Synopsis:

125mintuyThe “Here Comes Christmas Candy Cane” is an important part of Ponyville — it’s the beacon that shows jolly old Santa Claus the way to the town as he makes his holiday rounds each year. But when Minty accidentally breaks it, uh-oh! It looks like Ponyville is destined to have a bleak holiday season. Minty is determined to do anything to save Christmas for her Pony friends while they, in turn, band together to try and cheer up their despondent four-legged friend. Together, they all discover that Christmas can come anyway, wrapped in the love of good friends and the oversized heart of one little clumsy, minty-green Pony!

For kids that have grown accustomed to MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC on The Hub, there might be a moment or two of adjustment as the residents of Ponyville (which I believe pre-dates Equestria here) look like the ponies I remember playing with along with my sister in the mid-1980s, and not the stylized versions of today. While the visuals are the most striking difference, it's funny how astute a four-year-old can be: "Why does Rainbow Dash sound different?" For my daughter, it was the voices that signaled a change, but hardly had an effect on enjoyment. A VERY MINTY CHRISTMAS has likely just become a seasonal staple here at Rock Father HQ, and one that both of my daughters will be enjoying for years to come.
