Parenting is a balancing act. It doesn’t matter whether your’re a dad or a mom, being responsible for the lives of little human beings can be a daunting task. It’s a gig that goes in waves and cycles, with each passing year, a flip of the calendar that simply shuffles the deck to bring in new challenges - just as the kids take on new activities. Here at Rock Father HQ, our balance includes a corporate gig for my wife (a 40-mile commute twice a day, five days a week), a weird schedule for me that now involves travel roughly once a month, and then balancing those responsibilities with our girls. Two school schedules - one in full-day, one in half-day - plus all the other things like ballet, gymnastics, swimming lessons, girl scouts, theatre camp… and whatever else might happen to plug itself into the mix. It sounds like a lot because it is - but we love it, and we make it work, but that deck is always stacked, and the right balance is key. When something gets out of whack (and it has… many times), the whole thing can come tumbling down for a reset. Just like a stack of wooden blocks… or a well-balanced stack of delicious Cheerios.

My wife and I talk about it often - time (specifically, lack thereof) being a big issue for us as parents. As kids, we heard grownups talk about "time flying," but until you're actually an adult and a parent yourself, you just don't realize it. From a scientific standpoint, time is the same - but there has to be a correlation between size and time. When you're a little kid, the days seem to go forever. When you're physically bigger, the days seem shorter. There's also a chance that I made that up, but time is most certainly an issue. We want to spend time with our kids - time that increases the bond between parent and child - and that means utilizing our superior time management skills to "get stuff done," while still being there for our kids. What I'm saying is that I'm not opposed to eating breakfast in the shower. I get to save time by watching the girls brush their teeth, while I get clean and save a step by doing it fully-clothed. Seriously, just watch the video...

THE ROCK FATHER Magazine has partnered with XY Media Group & Pepto-Bismol as a Paid Ambassador for #PinkRelief

With the Holiday Season behind us, here I sit just days into the new year thinking back that the past few weeks have been, well, exhausting. Months of planning for events both personal and professional, and once December actually hits, it's like a complete blur until January. Now that the dust has settled a bit, I have to think about what settled my stomach: Pepto-Bismol. Sure, if Ralphie was here reading this website with his little decoder ring, he'd probably think of this post as "a crummy commercial" - but I'm completely serious when I say that the one time of the year that is completely ripe with overindulgence for me is Christmas. For some folks it's Thanksgiving (largely regarded as the biggest "eating" holiday of them all), but for me it's always from around December 20-31st each year. I should (and do) know better, but with munchies just sitting in the open around every corner, Holiday "grazing" leads to some big time stomach aches and indigestion. That's where #PinkRelief comes in.

THE ROCK FATHER loves Mac & Cheese, so he would’ve written about KRAFT Macaroni & Cheese Dinner even if it wasn’t a sponsored post for Socialstars #Youknowyouloveit

As parents there are quite a few traditions that my wife and I have carried over from our own childhoods, putting a modern spin on them and sharing with our daughters. Most of those things could be considered more pop-cultural - the movies, the toys, the games but there aren’t many of are traditions that involve food. On the surface, that might seem a little odd, both of us coming from relatively large extended families, rooted in food-centric cultures of Italian and German heritage. Times have changed, as have tastes. And what we know about the things we eat - but one childhood tradition that we have carried on is just about as American as they come and continues to get better with age: KRAFT Macaroni & Cheese Dinner.

There’s a lot of benefits to doing what I do, and the warmer months are where that largely becomes apparent. While the Rock & Roll Handbook clearly states that one should never wake up prior to noon, that’s doesn’t exactly work here, despite being “The Rock Father.” With my wife out the door at 6:30am and two little girls to get rolling for school, I’m up early - but working from home means that sometimes I can move “dinner” up a few hours, or just make something special for lunch. Grilled sausage at noon on a weekday, paired with KRAFT Macaroni & Cheese? That can happen.

THE ROCK FATHER™ has partnered with Life of Dad and STOUFFER’S® as a paid Ambassador for the #FitKitchen promotion. As always, opinions are that of James Zahn, though sometimes influenced by his kids.

THE "WINGMAN": Over the years, that term has meant many things to many people, often conjuring images of action - "Top Gun" fighter pilots flanked by other members of their squadron, heading into battle... or sometimes it's that same level of back-up while vying for the attraction of another - like the silly friend in a romantic comedy. Here in Illinois (especially this close to Chicago), it's a totally different life movie, and sometimes a good Wingman is simply an "associate" - something I can assure you that I know nothing about. No matter what the specifics, being a Wingman means being there for support, and right now I have a new Wingman here in my kitchen at Rock Father HQ - STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen Meals. Now, if you've been following me on Instagram (and if you're not, it would be a lot cooler if you did), you've probably seen one of the #AtTheGym selfies I've been posting late at night over the past 18 months. I've been on a mission to get into better shape, and eating better is a big part of that. That's where STOUFFER’S® Fit Kitchen steps-up to assist...
