Between toys and music - the stuff my girls and I are checking out now, along with all the retro goodness that I tend to get into, a lot of weird stuff crosses our paths and enters our space. Tonight I've got a sonic oddity to share, one that takes the 1980s MY BUDDY dolls (the inspiration for "Chucky" of the CHILD'S PLAY movies) and the accompanying KID SISTER that Playskool made, and gives their famous theme a "metal" spin. Check that out below, along with similar treatment given to classic commercials for JUICY FRUIT and SKIP-IT, each made by Shaun Callaghan of GIVE ZOMBIES THE VOTE. It reminds me of LESS THAN JAKE's TV EP.
Oh yes, the retro vibe is mighty this week (see: RAINBOW BRITE). American Greetings' CARE BEARS hit big here back in 2012 when the recently-departed Hub Network debuted CARE BEARS: WELCOME TO CARE-A-LOT. I reviewed the pilot episode here on THE ROCK FATHER, and later featured the show several times, including in a 31 Days of Halloween entry. I grew up on Care Bears, and have some fond memories of my sister and I playing with the Kenner action figures based on the Care Bears and their Cousins. Yes, Kenner (now Hasbro), makers of the iconic STAR WARS action figures, had a full line of Care Bears "poseables" figures, vehicles and playsets. I had the Cloud Car, along with the Cloud Keeper and Professor Cold Heart, as well as a few like Brave Heart Lion from THE CARE BEARS MOVIE. Why is this important now? Well, the CARE BEARS AND COUSINS are coming to Netflix in a new series.
I think we can call this now... the 1980s are our 1950s. Just like the baby boomers fueled a 50s nostalgia trip in the mid-80s, kids like me (pushing 40) are fueling an 80s nostalgia trip in the mid 10s. Checking the roster to see who all's been called-up from the "decade of excess," I see STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE, the CARE BEARS, MY LITTLE PONY, the TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE, and the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES just represented here in my office at Rock Father HQ. There's certainly more, as I know that JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, VOLTRON and a few other properties are on-deck for "reboots" or "re-imaginings," and THE POPPLES are coming to Netflix, but tonight we have news on another: RAINBOW BRITE.
Now this is pretty interesting... and a fantastic move by Disney. The mouse-owned ABC will air STAR WARS REBELS: SPARK OF REBELLION in a special presentation on October 26 at 7pm e/p, but with an additional scene featuring the undisputed king of STAR WARS villains, DARTH VADER.
1984. Yes, it was 30 years ago already that Zuul and the gang came to New York, getting the town slimed, marshmallowed, and otherwise messed up. It four crazy guys - Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Dr. Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore (not a Dr.) - who were charged with "Cleanin' Up The Town," and GHOSTBUSTERS became one of the most popular films of all-time. For 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER, the Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary Collection makes it's way into the countdown, with some fantastic collectibles and items available only for a limited time!
I was just telling my wife about this one the other night, not even realizing that it wasn't formally announced yet, but now the little furry creatures are officially out of the bag: THE POPPLES are back. Originally introduced as toys and an animated series back in 1985, Saban Brands is bringing the adventures of these little furballs (who transform from fuzzy balls into friends and then "pop" back again) to NETFLIX as an all-new, 26-episode animated series set to debut in 2015.
