Kinder Eggs are Finally Coming to the U.S., but with some Changes...

Written by

It's been a long-running controversy... why Kinder Surprise Eggs are available just about anywhere but the U.S. Officially, it's been a safety issue, one even referenced in a recent gun control ad that points out the candy is banned, while certain assault rifles are not. These chocolate eggs, each packed with a toy surprise inside, have been confiscated by customs for years, but now the Kinder brand is finally coming to the U.S. in a legal manner. Ferrero U.S.A, Inc., the company known for famous brands such as Ferrero Rocher®, Nutella® and Tic Tac®, is now launching Kinder Joy® – touted as "a unique treat made especially for kids with parents in mind." Differing from their overseas counterparts, Kinder Joy is a plastic egg-shaped package that is comprised of two separately sealed halves. One half contains candy, the other a toy.

From the Official Announcement: One half contains a delicious treat made of two soft cream layers – one sweet milk-cream flavored and one cocoa flavored.  Nestled into the creamy layers are two round, chocolate-covered wafer bites that are filled with sweet cocoa cream, to be eaten with the included spoon.

The other half of the egg contains an exciting surprise toy, giving kids and parents an opportunity to assemble, play and share together. Kinder Joy has a wide range of surprise toys developed by our expert team of designers to maximize play time for children ages three and up – from toys that encourage creativity to toys that teach kids about the world around them. In addition, seasonal and special licensed toys will be made available throughout the year (while supplies last) to keep the surprises coming.

"When you're a kid, every surprise counts, especially the little ones. Kinder Joy is a fun, new way to help parents bring little surprises to their kids anytime they want," said Paul Chibe, CEO of Ferrero North America. "The delicious, unique taste of Kinder Joy and the wide variety of toys will delight kids, while mom and dad will be surprised by the high quality of the confection and toys – it's unlike anything currently on the US market."

For nearly 50 years, the Kinder brand has been delighting families around the world bringing parents and children together by offering them delicious and joy-filled moments to share.  Currently sold in 170 countries, the Kinder brand offers a wide range of high quality products from chocolate bars to surprise-filled treats.

"Growing up in Sweden, I remember when my mom used to give me Kinder products as a child – the anticipation of the delicious treat was fun and special," recalls Malin Akerman, actress and longtime Kinder fan. "That's why I'm looking forward to help welcome the Kinder brand to the US – now I can pass on these delicious treats to my son and see him experience the same genuine surprise and delight that I did every time he opens a Kinder Joy egg."

"Today's parents are looking for an elevated experience for their children, even in their treats. Kinder Joy offers more than just a sweet treat and mystery toy, it also gives parents the opportunity to engage with their children through the Magic Kinder online and mobile platforms," adds Paul Chibe.

As part of the experience, parents can access Magic Kinder, an edutainment app that offers a digital world of fun and education. These platforms are designed to help families play and learn together through a wide range of engaging games, videos, stories and activities. It is completely free and can be accessed through www.magic.kinder, the iOS and Android app stores or through the QR code that is printed on the information leaflet that accompanies the toys inside the Kinder Joy egg.

Kinder Joy will be sold nationwide at mass, grocery, drug and convenience stores beginning November 2017 with a MSRP of $1.59 USD per egg.
