THE ROCK FATHERRock Father vs. Rock Father - It's been twelve weeks since James Zahn and Tom George (read the kick-off story here) began a year-long journey to not only lose weight, but get fit. These two Work-at-Home Dads had let time and their jobs take their toll on their personal well-being. For each week of the journey, we've been checking-in to find out how their efforts are paying off. This past Sunday (March 23, 2014), both men did their weigh-in... and these are the results.

So here's the deal: People ask me all the time, "The Rock Father, why do you rock so hard how do you look so great all the time?" Yes, they address me with "The" before "Rock Father," much like you'd always address THE AQUABATS as "The" Aquabats. But nevermind that, because I'm being silly here... people never ask me that, because I look completely disheveled more often than not these days, but I'm working on it. I'm a work-at-home Dad, and while this website and my adventures in media are a big part of my life, the biggest part of my life is raising my two daughters, Adalyn and Finley. With all the time I spend with them (as I type this, we're actually in-between Parent-Tot Playtime at the Park District and Gymnastics this afternoon), sometimes I forget to take care of myself.

Two years ago, I celebrated one-year tobacco-free with a blog about my personal journey. Then, in 2013, I posted again, celebrating the two-year anniversary of coming clean (cigarettes are a drug). Today I am posting once again, as it's the three-year anniversary of kicking the habit. As I've done previously, I am re-posting much of my original blog entry here on THE ROCK FATHER, along with a few alterations and timely updates. Last year, I discussed how Marlboro (under the Philip Morris or Altria name) won't leave me alone. It's continued for another year... and perhaps it's time to lawyer up?

March 14, 2011 is the day that I officially quit smoking. At some point on the night of March 13, I quietly took the last puff of the last cigarette in the last pack that I ever owned. Upon telling my wife that I was officially ''done,'' she took it upon herself to clean-up some of the ''smoker's mess'' that I'd created. The ashtrays of both cars were scoured. The sand-filled flowerpots that I'd strategically placed on my front porch and near my gardening shed were disposed of, along with a ton of stray butts that had made their way into the surrounding landscape over the winter months. The cleansing had begun.

Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? It sure is, and to celebrate, the National Restaurant Association hit THE ROCK FATHER with news that its first-of-its-kind Kids LiveWell initiative has grown to 42,000 restaurant locations nationwide. The voluntary program, which provides a growing selection of healthful children’s menu choices in every state, now counts more than 145 restaurant brands as participants, including new national companies Cosi, Jamba Juice and Rainforest Café, as well as Ovation Brands’ Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet and Old Country Buffet, among other regional chains and independent restaurants.
