Each Mother's Day, I post a similar message on THE ROCK FATHER and all of my social networks: "For All the Moms Who Rock, I Salute You." Yes, that play on the old AC/DC classic "For Those About to Rock" is something I stand behind, but this year, I have something very special for all of you to go with it - a Kindie Rock playlist from a group of true All-Stars, all of whom are allowing me to share their music with you as a FREE DOWNLOAD for the next week. Below the break, you'll find ten songs for Moms to share and enjoy with their kids - tracks from folks like Seattle's THE NOT-ITS!, the wonderful LUCKY DIAZ and THE FAMILY JAM BAND, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS bassist DANNY WEINKAUF, and more...
For STAR WARS DAY 2014, I'm featuring a handful of STAR WARS-inspired music here on THE ROCK FATHER for your enjoyment and consumption. After all, what other Pop Culture franchise has inspired so many musical homages and parodies? Sure, HARRY POTTER and THE LORD OF THE RINGS are up there, but nothing trumps STAR WARS in the musical inspiration department. Here's seven STAR WARS-themed pieces of music worth checking out as you celebrate May 4th. May the Fourth Be With You!
This week, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS bassist DANNY WEINKAUF released NO SCHOOL TODAY, his first solo-album of Kindie rock goodness. While you've still got a few more days left in which you could win one right here on THE ROCK FATHER, the album hit Amazon and iTunes, and with it came a new music video for "Marsupial." Check it out below, and crank it up!
It was just over two years ago already that I reviewed the self-titled debut from RIFF ROCKIT, the multimedia, kindie alter-ego of Evan Michael. In that time, the project has grown, and now it's time for Michael (a leukemia survivor) to give back, with the release of his first Spanish-Language album, LUZ VERDE VAMOS! All proceeds from the sale of this new record (out June 17) will benefit the blood cancer research efforts of BE THE MATCH.
Twice in the past month this has happened to me - that uneasy feeling when a new album arrives by one of your favorite artists and doesn't manage to live up to expectations. It always puts me in that weird spot where I almost don't want to say anything at all, if only because I don't want unfamiliar listeners to avoid giving other albums from an artist's back (or future) catalog a spin... but then there's just the reality that as a reviewer, I have to do the same thing I've done in varying capacities since 1992, and lay it out - tell it like it is, and offer up my opinion. After all, as PRIMUS once said, "they can't all be zingers."
Well, this is a reminder out of nowhere. The folks at READING RAINBOW have been in touch a few times over the past few years, and every time I hear from them, I automatically end up getting the theme song to the iconic LeVar Burton family literature series stuck in my head. So why did it get stuck in my head this morning? No, it wasn't communique from READING RAINBOW at all, but an email from comedy metal band, PSYCHOSTICK. The band has just released a cover version of that earworm-inducing theme song, and you can hear it right here on THE ROCK FATHER, below.
