In an election year, it's appropriate that the 2016 Journeys Alternative Press Music Awards, Fueled by Monster Energy has adopted a familiar red, white & blue color scheme as fan voting opens for the annual APMAS.  The nominees were revealed today via posts on Instagram and Twitter, along with a reminder that the show is being displaced from its longtime home in Cleveland due to the upcoming Republican National Convention. This year's event will instead be broadcast live from the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio on the evening of July 18, 2016, with 8-time AP cover artists Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat of ALL TIME LOW returning for hosting duties once more. Funk. Yep, catch me when the time is right, and I very well might be "The Funk Father." I've always had an affection for proper 70s funk and soul - even trying to work some of those grooves into my own jams back in that strange time called "The 1990s." My Dunlop Cry Baby Wah Wah pedal got a workout in those days, and while most of what I did went in some weird punky-metal direction, my own musical schizophrenia diversity has always led me to enjoy many types of music, despite "rock" being home base. Now, four of the original Ohio Players (Drummer James ‘Diamond’ Williams, Keyboardist Billy Beck, Guitarist Clarence ‘Chet’ Willis and Percussionist Robert ‘Kuumba’ Jones) are back in the studio working on a new record with an energized line-up and they're seeking some crowdfunding help to make it happen. Check out the details on the new album, RESET below, along with The Ohio Players' IndieGoGo pitch...

Regular readers of THE ROCK FATHER know that I'm a big fan of The J.M Smucker Company. Smucker's is an American tradition, so when I had a chance to visit their headquarters in Orrville, Ohio last Fall for their Holiday Traditions gathering, I jumped at it. While I had a great time and learned a lot (want a killer Brussels Sprouts recipe?), I couldn't help thinking that my family would like to visit there as well, so on our first-ever Great American Road Trip series, I took my wife and daughters to The J.M. Smucker Company Store and Cafe for a late lunch and a little bit of shopping as we made our way back to Illinois last month.
