5 Cool Tips To Stay Comfy This Summer

Summer is finally here, and with the change of seasons comes changing temperatures. Depending on where you live, summer can get incredibly uncomfortable and hot, especially during the night when you're trying to sleep. Instead of sweating through the season, use these tips to stay cool in your home all summer long.

Invest In Insulation

Insulation isn't just useful during the winter to keep you warm. Having insulation with a higher R-value can help you stay cooler in the summer by keeping your cooled air inside your house, rather than letting it escape and wasting energy. The R-value is the measure of thermal resistance, which indicates the temperature difference when a unit of heat runs through it. Essentially, the higher the R-value, the better the insulation. If you're planning on tackling some home repair this summer, this is one area you might want to address.

Lower Temperatures With Lighting

Even if you don't necessarily notice it all the time, the lights in your house could be giving off just enough heat to cause a few additional problems during the summer months. To fix this issue, try switching to LED bulbs. Unlike incandescent bulbs, which release 90% of their energy as heat, LEDs use energy far more efficiently with little wasted heat. You'll have brighter lighting throughout your home without having to worry as much about beating the heat.

Fantastic Fans

Ceiling fans can be a great way to reduce your energy bill while still keeping your home cool. Just make sure you've got yours spinning the right direction; some ceiling fans are able to switch directions to help with heating your home in the wintertime, so double check to see if you've changed it back. If you don't have a ceiling fan, consider investing in a separate fan for some of the warmer spaces in your house so you aren't over-exerting your A/C unit.

Smarter Sheets

Ever wake up in the middle of the night because it's just too hot in your room? You might want to switch out your sheets. Changing to a lighter, more breathable fabric like cotton for your linens in the summer can make sleeping in hot weather a bit more comfortable. You'll be able to sleep through the night without having to drive up the energy bill by cranking up the A/C.

Don't Forget Your Furry Friends

You and your family aren't the only ones feeling the heat during the summer. According to The American Pet Products Association, almost 85 million households have a pet. Be mindful of the heat when it comes to taking care of your pets. Some animals enjoy the hot weather, but if you're starting to feel the burn, chances are your dog with a fluffy coat is too. Keep extra water out for animals and help them find ways to stay cool.

With summer just around the corner, now is the time to get your home ready so you can stay comfy and cool all season long. How do you plan to cool off your home without running up your energy bill this season?

This Hotel Transylvania Special Feature is presented in collaboration between The Rock Father™ Magazine, Pollinate Media Group® and Snyder’s-Lance Inc.

With summer in full swing, we've entered the big summer movie season both in theaters and at home. For regular readers, it should be no secret that we're big movie fans, and while the traditional cinema experience can be a cool break from the hot summer temperatures, our family loves going to the drive-in, and we also love showing movies in our backyard theater right here at home. Backyard movies are a great way to bring the neighborhood together, and depending on what you're showing, it can also lend itself to some fun themes. Since Sony Pictures Animation's Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is arriving in theaters on July 13, here's five essentials for throwing a Hotel Transylvania double-feature to get re-acquainted with how the story of Dracula and Mavis began. You'll be all caught up before Drac's pack sets sail on a monster cruise ship helmed by a Captain who holds a mysterious secret that could threaten them all!

Pringles SummerJam 300x128When you're into playing music, everything around you has the potential to be used for sonic purposes. While I've always been a guitarist first, I've been known to have percussionist aspirations, going as far as to put a five-piece drum set in our garage - something that The Rock Daughters™ and their friends really enjoy dabbling with. When the crew over at Pringles® asked me to offer up some thoughts about how I'd do a jam (like their Pringles® Summer Jam® Summer Jam!) I agreed, but at Rock Father HQ, there's music being played every day already. I just can't say it's always good, but I'll strap a few Pringles® cans to the drum set to see what I can do...

When the UPS man arrives here at Rock Father HQ each day ("Package Man," as the girls call him), I sometimes receive some... shall we say, "interesting" things. Once in awhile, said items are oddly practical, and pretty on-the-mark for my personal tastes (or lack thereof). One of the latest oddities novelties to arrive is THE GRILL SERGEANT Grilling Apron from Big Mouth Inc. Yes, I have a well-documented Camo appreciation, and I also like G.I. JOE quite a bit. Perhaps it's because I feel like "A Real American Hero" of the grill... or maybe I'm sort of amused by the weird looks that the kids next door give me when I'm wearing it, but I dig this thing.

Meguiar'sThe love of cars runs deep here at Rock Father HQ, and the summer months bring with them a lot of opportunities to enjoy some automotive fun as a family. One of the regular activities that the girls and I often enjoy is the simple act of getting our rides cleaned-up, shined-up, and ready to rock the road some more. The great feeling of a clean vehicle is something that never gets old - and the impact of a "before-and-after" is something that's always very pronounced when it comes to the oldest vehicle in our fleet, my little workhorse: the 2005 Scion xB that I ordered new back in 2004. With over 160,000 miles on it, this little car tends to be my daily driver with the girls for scooting around town, and while it's dinged, scratched and has a few rust spots, it's truly incredible how good it can look with just a little bit of TLC. For our first solid cleaning of the summer, the girls and I had some Meguiar's products in the mix, and we're going to give all of you a chance to bring home a Meguiar's Prize Pack to help get your ride looking great!

THE ROCK FATHER loves Mac & Cheese, so he would’ve written about KRAFT Macaroni & Cheese Dinner even if it wasn’t a sponsored post for Socialstars #Youknowyouloveit

There’s a lot of benefits to doing what I do, and the warmer months are where that largely becomes apparent. While the Rock & Roll Handbook clearly states that one should never wake up prior to noon, that’s doesn’t exactly work here, despite being “The Rock Father.” With my wife out the door at 6:30am and two little girls to get rolling for school, I’m up early - but working from home means that sometimes I can move “dinner” up a few hours, or just make something special for lunch. Grilled sausage at noon on a weekday, paired with KRAFT Macaroni & Cheese? That can happen.
