The Rock Father's 31 Days of Halloween: Day 3 - If your kids like comic books (or you're thinking about introducing them to the world of comics), then Halloween is a prime time to do so as Diamond Comic Distributors partners with select publishers and retailers for Halloween ComicFest 2012, a first-ever all-ages celebration with FREE Comics, a Costume Contest, and more.
Fans of Hasbro's popular MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC (currently airing on The Hub) will have something new to enjoy come this november. At the in-progress Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego, IDW Publishing and Hasbro announced that they'd be bringing the popular series into comic book form. IDW’s MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC comics will offer all-new stories featuring the beloved ponies: TWILIGHT SPARKLE, PINKIE PIE, RARITY, FLUTTERSHY, RAINBOW DASH, and APPLEJACK.
It's Saturday, May 5, 2012 - which means that it's FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! Yes, it's the annual day in which independent comic shops open their doors to readers new and old to dish out some free books for kids of all ages. While I don't agree with some of the marketing materials regarding the popularity of print comic books these days, I do think that this is an important day, and the perfect chance to take the kids to a local comic book store.
Well, this certainly came out of the blue this morning... and The Rock Father™ approves.
I'm still a little weirded out when I see MARVEL merchandise inside THE DISNEY STORE (even though I love both brands), but it's even weirder when someone from Disney sends you a preview of brand-NEW music from SOUNDGARDEN via AVENGERS ASSEMBLE: Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture. Would you like to hear a 22-second snippet of the first new SOUNDGARDEN single in 15 years? S.H.I.E.L.D. commands you to read on... and Live to Rise.
As each day passes, I always wonder if my children will be able to experience comic books the way I did growing up. It's no secret that the rise of digital vs. print and the skyrocketing cost of everything has taken a toll on the comic book industry, and it's becoming increasingly hard to find a cool local comic shop the way it was back in the 80's. One of the longest-running comic series' and publishers is ARCHIE, and while their flagship title generally still moves 15-20K print copies a month, they're embracing digital and facebook to reach new readers.
