SIDNEY YORK prepares for the release of HEARTS...

Written by

So, last July, I'm headed for the exit at McCormick Place in Chicago when a rep from Daily's Cocktails snags me and tells me that there's something I need to see... a "free concert," she tells me. I've got time, so I follow her lead into a cavernous ballroom (this place is massive) where the name SIDNEY YORK is displayed on projection screens. I made my way to the front, and took a seat at a table near the stage. What was missing here was a crowd, and that's a shame, but the problem was... no one seemed to know that this concert was about to take place, despite it being held at BlogHer '13, a convention that was being attended by thousands of bloggers, most of which were female, as the name implies.

Watch: BLUE STAHLI - DOWN IN FLAMES (Lyric Video)

Written by

61j2OuCMGPL. AA125 This past week, Detroit's BLUE STAHLI released the first chapter of his new album, THE DEVIL (iTunes | Amazon).

To go along with hit, he released a lyric video for "Down In Flames," which can be viewed below...

If you're like me, you've probably already caught a stream of METALLICA's recent, record-breaking performance in Antarctica via one of the unofficial uploads that surfaced earlier this month. If not, or if you want to see it in proper HD (I'm listening to it as I type this), the band has uploaded the full performance to their official channel, offering fans a chance to check out the December 8th performance in all of it's glory. Check it out below...

FREE DOWNLOAD: Live EP from FUN.

Written by

I'm not a big fan of fun., but my wife is, so I just snagged the new live EP that the band is offering as a FREE DOWNLOAD via Noisetrade. Before Shane Went to Bankok: FUN. Live in the USA features six songs recorded live during the MOST NIGHTS Tour, one of which is a previously-unreleased non-album track. Get the download via the widget below...

I remember the early days of the Snocore Tour (bands like SYSTEM OF A DOWN, MR. BUNGLE, and THE AQUABATS rockin' the stage), though in recent years it sorta dropped off my radar, even going completely AWOL for the past two. Now, after it's short hiatus, Wind-Up Records and TKO are bringing it back as a celebration of music and winter sports. Headlining this year are the THE PRETTY RECKLESS with HEAVEN'S BASEMENT, THE LETTER BLACK, and CROBOT in support. On each date of the tour, one local artist will be chosen to play from ReverbNation. Full details from the official announcement below...

125snoopI love a good rap cover. KORN's version of ICE CUBE's "Wicked," BEN FOLDS version of DR. DRE's "Bitches Ain't Shit," THROWDOWN's version of the SIR MIX-A-LOT classic "Baby Got Back," or DYNAMITE HACK's iconic version of EASY-E's "Boyz-n-the-Hood" all come immediately to mind (along with countless others). Now comes word into Rock Father HQ that Engine Room Recordings will pay tribute to Tha Doggfather himself, when DOGGYSTYLE RESTYLED: A TRIBUTE TO SNOOP DOGG is released on December 17. Check out GARRISON STARR (feat. PJ PACIFICO) doing an acoustic spin on "Gin and Juice" below...

As I approached the iconic marquee in front of The Metro in Chicago last night, I realized something: I hadn't been to a show there in a very long time. During the mid-late 90s (and even into the early 00s), The Metro was a regular haunt for me - a place to check a host of metal, industrial, punk, hardcore and alternative shows. I saw bands like ACUMEN NATION and SMASHING PUMPKINS on that stage, took my wife to see MR. BUNGLE there, and saw countless, no-name local thrashers who would eventually disappear back into the shadows from which they came.

REVEREND HORTON HEAT's new album REV is coming...

Written by

On January 21, 2014, Chicago's Victory Records will release REV, the eleventh studio album from one of my favorite artists, the REVEREND HORTON HEAT. Today, pre-order packages for the new album and merch went live, and a video was released with an inside look at the Rev's Gretsch Signature Guitar. And while you can win one of the Rev's new Christmas Sweaters right here on The Rock Father, you can grab one of those at Victory, too if you're so inclined.

I think that GWAR frontman Oderus Urungus is contemplating becoming a parent. After reading GOODNIGHT MOON to mixed results recently, seemingly out-of-nowhere comes THE ANIMATED ADVENTURES OF GWAR, a new GWARtoon cartoon over at Funny or Die. In the nine-minute short film, Orderus becomes a children's performer... breaking out the acoustic guitar for some kindie rock action, which is oddly appropriate here on The Rock Father. Now, keep in mind... this is GWAR we're talking about here, and despite an appearance by "Weird Al" Yankovic, this cartoon is being featured in my "For Grownups" section because it's definitely not safe for the kids, and it's probably not safe for work (unless you work somewhere really cool). Enjoy...

I was just about to enter my Junior year of High School when ERIC CLAPTON released UNPLUGGED in August of 1992. A budding musician myself, I admired Clapton's playing, and 21 years later, I still have my copy of UNPLUGGED here in the archives at Rock Father HQ - heavily-played and in a cracked case. Now, my friends at Reprise Records have released ERIC CLAPTON - UNPLUGGED AND REMASTERED, a 2CD/1DVD collection containing a host of enhanced and previously-unreleased music and video. Even better? Reprise has teamed up with THE ROCK FATHER to get one lucky reader hooked-up with a copy for their own collection!

Back in 1994, THE BEATLES released LIVE AT THE BBC , selling more than five million copies in less than six weeks. Now, on November 11, a companion album, ON AIR - LIVE AT THE BBC Volume 2  will be released through iTunes, the 63-track collection joining it's remastered prequel for the very first time. Tracklistings can be found below, and pre-orders for both are up on iTunes now, with physical versions available on CD and Vinyl LP.

This week, Slimstyle Records releases SILVER, a 2-DVD, 1 CD set that chronicles THE MISSION U.K. in their 25th Anniversary performances in Europe. To celebrate the release, they've teamed up with The Rock Father to get two readers hooked-up with their own copies of SILVER. Check out a performance of "Garden of Delight" below, complete with all the details on this new set. And be sure to get those giveaway entries in, Chicago-style (early and often)!
