There have been plenty of orchestral covers of popular music over the years, from those "String Tribute" albums to variations performed by various smaller configurations, sometimes focusing on specific instruments, like cello. Today comes something bigger - a full orchestra comprised of "some of L.A.'s finest session players," tackling some iconic songs by the likes of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, TOOL, SYSTEM OF A DOWN and more. Metamorphestra is a brand-new orchestra, founded in 2016 by conductor Nick Proch, and they hit my radar thanks to a performance of SOAD's "Chop Suey!" that took place at Capitol Studios. The clip comes as the orchestra seeks to crowdfund their debut album via Kickstarter. Check out the incredibly cinematic reimagining below...

The October issue of Metal Hammer Magazine happens to be their 30th Anniversary issue, and to celebrate they've done something special with their monthly CD, serving up DECADES OF DESTRUCTION, a sixteen track compilation of covers. While there's much to be curious about (full tracklisting below), it's the lead track that I was most curious about - a classic song by my favorite band of all-time, covered by another of my favorites. Check out KORN performing FAITH NO MORE's "We Care A Lot" below. It took a little bit for me to get into it, but it's a grower...

Netflix #StreamTeamOne of this year's most surprising new series' for families comes from Netflix, with BEAT BUGS bridging generations by introducing new listeners to the music of THE BEATLES through the adventures of five best friends -- Jay, Kumi, Crick, Buzz and Walter -- who band together to discover life's most important lessons in an overgrown suburban backyard, which to them is their entire universe. When the first 13-episode season began streaming earlier this month, it was an immediate hit right out of the gate here at Rock Father HQ, but for us it came with a challenge posited by the leaders of the Netflix #StreamTeam, a crew I've been a part of for the past three years: Cover "All You Need Is Love" and invite all of you to do the same. BEAT BUGS opens with a 30-second rendition of the 1967 single from the Lennon-McCartney songbook, and just as the original is said to have taken 33 takes to get right, The Rock Daughters™ and I (with Mommy behind the camera) couldn't quite nail it in one shot...

I've certainly been responsible for playing more than a few NIRVANA covers over the years, albeit ones that no one has heard in a public setting since probably the late 1990s. That said, I'm always interested in hearing others put their stamp on one of my favorite bands, and I've come across plenty - many good, many bad. Today comes a pretty good one courtesy of the GRAVEL KINGS, a Florida band with a new EP in the pipeline. Check out "Come As You Are" below, and look for LURE to hit the streets on September 9, 2016.

As a noted "Cover Song Enthusiast," I like to feature some creative covers here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine from time to time, along with in my curated Spotify Playlists - with COVERED now spanning Three Volumes (I, II, III). The past few years and the rise of YouTube have brought forth a number of "Cover Stars" as well, sort of picking up the torch from bands like ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMMES and absolutely running with it. One such artist is Leo Moracchioli of Frog Leap Studios in Norway, someone you've likely seen since his videos go viral with increasing frequency (he's a fellow "Rock Father," too). One of his more recent cuts is this cover of Twenty One Pilots' "Stressed Out," and I'm featuring it today.

Matt Zane and SOCIETY 1 have been plotting a tribute to THE DOORS for quite some time, but now the plans have been laid out. Today the band released a video for their cover of "Wild Child," along with the launch of an IndieGoGo campaign intended to bring their tribute album to life. Their goal is "to completely re-envision what The Doors may have sounded like if they created their music in 2016." Check out "Wild Child" and the SOCIETY 1 pitch video below...
