Two decades after bursting onto the scene, Good Charlotte is back with a new single and music video, "Last December."
The new track is the first new music from the band since 2018's Generation RX and comes via the band's new MDDN label. The new video is a time capsule for 2020 reflecting closed venues and a world on pause amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Former members of pioneering post-hardcore band Dag Nasty, including Doug Carrion and Peter Cortner, and former Down By Law guitarist Mark Phillips, have announced plans to play a select number of shows this summer under the under the moniker Field Day, with new music to follow in 2020.
Perhaps the most notorious outcasts of the Dag Nasty franchise to date, Carrion and Cortner performed on Dag Nasty’s landmark recordings 'Wig Out at Denko’s' (Dischord Records) and 'Field Day' (Giant Records), and played some 300 shows throughout the United States and Canada in the late 80’s. These recordings are credited as cornerstones of what was eventually termed melodic hardcore, and inspired new bands like Pennywise and Rise Against.
Back in the early 2000s, there was a small company here in Illinois that made SMITI action figures - little Kubrick-style versions of bands like Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Powerman 5000, The Offspring and No Doubt. I had a few of the sets and they were pretty fun, but then the maker (Stevenson Entertainment) sorta disappeared. Fast-forward to tonight and I just had a flashback when Japanese toymaker brokker got in touch about their new SEX PISTOLS collection, set for launch in the U.S., UK and Japan in January of 2019. After previously focusing on Japanese bands, this marks brokker's first entry onto the global stage. The SEX PISTOLS set features articulated mini-figures that represent the UK punk icons in their "God Save the Queen" stage gear.
This month, IGGY POP: LIVE IN BASEL 2015 comes to theaters around the U.S. for a limited engagement as part of a global screening even from Rising Alternative. Here in Illinois, just two theaters are screening it, with Chicago's Music Box Theatre hosting the film on June 16 & 18, and the Cinemark Century 12 Evanston/CineArts 6 AND XD playing it on June 22. Check out a very brief trailer below, along with a full setlist from the concert film. For cities and dates for a screening near you, click here.
As we enter 2015, there's a lot of celebration going on right now. For me, it's looking forward to another great year with my wife and our girls, and on the work front, another year of putting forth some fun content for families right here on THE ROCK FATHER. As the ball drops in NYC and the poppers go off and send the confetti flying, it's a 100% certainty that the familiar sound of "Auld Lang Syne" will be playing for many. While it's a song that I've never really cared for, there is a version that I like, and it's a perfect way to close the books on 2014 here at Rock Father HQ. Crank up the speakers and hit the player below for the MxPx version of "Auld Lang Syne" from their 2009 album, PUNK RAWK CHRISTMAS. If you dig it, you can support the band and buy it directly from them via Bandcamp for just a buck. Happy New Year!
I'm gonna hop in the DeLorean and take you back to an era well more than a decade ago at this point - an era where pop-punk reigned, with labels like Drive-Thru and Fearless cranking a steady output of Warped Tour-ready acts, and bands like NEW FOUND GLORY, BLINK-182, GOOD CHARLOTTE, SUM 41 and SIMPLE PLAN were topping the charts. Riding that wave were a ton of bands that never quite made the same impact, but on local and regional levels were carrying the torch high for melodic rock with anthemic, sing-along choruses. Here in Northern Illinois, I'd once crossed paths with a band called THE BRUCE CHI AFFAIR (I did a video for them), who later evolved into FINAL ROUND (who I also did a video for). FINAL ROUND was great at what they did, but like many bands, they hit a few snags with members both moving or even passing on (their late drummer D-Max even played with yours truly on an EP back in '04). Over the years, FINAL ROUND never really went away, but now they're officially back on the map with the release of IT ENDS WITH US BOTH RIGHT HERE, which hit iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp this week. Stream the full album below, right here on THE ROCK FATHER...
