Fans on smartphones at concerts are a hot button issue for both artists and fans alike. On one hand, it can be seen as intrusive and taking away from the spontaneity of the live performance, but on the other - it can provide for a captured memory that may live forever on YouTube, and often serve as a snapshot of something historic. While the devices have changed, fan-filmed official videos are not a new thing. Beastie Boys made an entire (excellent) movie by putting cameras into the hands of their fans, and Metallica has been allowing filming since the Snakepit days of the Black Album tour cycle.
