On June 10, REELZ Channel will drop the curtain on their new original docu-series, Breaking the Band. Season one will take a look at the battling egos, power struggles and inter-band rivalries that split up The Beatles, The Supremes, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, N.W.A, Van Halen and Sonny and Cher. From crippling drug addictions to scandalous affairs Breaking the Band uncovers the incredible true stories by recreating the key moments the cameras missed in addition to using rare band interviews and off-stage footage to piece together each dramatic tale. The folks at REELZ sent over a short clip, which I debuted on Twitter this morning. Check it out below...

Holiday Wish Guide Giveaway: LOVE & MERCY

I've long had an interest in music-based films, at times indulging in a heavy diet of documentaries and biopics. When Bill Pohlad's LOVE & MERCY came along, I approached it not just with interest, but with curiosity - I, like many, questioning the dual casting of both Paul Dano and John Cusack as THE BEACH BOYS' Brian Wilson. As audiences quickly came to see, the dual casting of 60s Brian and 80s Brian was inspired - and the occasional glimpses of the real Brian Wilson through archive footage only added to the surreal portrayal of one of music's finest writers and arrangers. Yes, they look different from one another (though Dano really nails the 60s appearance), but they feel like the same person - the film playing as a seamless portrait between an artist on the cusp of greatness, and an artist both lost and trapped. LOVE & MERCY is one of my featured picks for music lovers in my 2015 Holiday Wish Guide, and through November 1st, Lionsgate and THE ROCK FATHER are giving you a chance to win a copy!

If you're into music history like me, a must-see for this year needs to be THE WRECKING CREW. Just-released on Blu-ray by Magnolia Pictures, Denny Tedesco's documentary was inspired by his father, Tommy - a member of the legendary, yet largely unknown musicians known as The Wrecking Crew - the true performers behind some of the biggest hits of the 60s and 70s. In fact, the sheer volume of famous tunes that this crew contributed to is in large part the reason that this film (which started loose production back in 1996) took so long to get a proper release - the music licensing fees were expensive.  After some limited screenings, Tedesco raised funds via Kickstarter to get the licensing wrapped, and now it's available to the masses. The folks at Magnolia Pictures recently provided me with a couple of copies on Blu-ray, and one of those could soon be yours...

From THE BEACH BOYS to THE MONKEES, FRANK SINATRA to NAT KING COLE, SONNY AND CHER to THE THE BYRDS and beyond, these are the players who made the hits, and many audiences never knew of their existence until now.
