The 1990s were a glorious time for music, especially rock music. It was a time when it wasn't uncommon to see quality bands rockin' the stage on television, with the heavier, and sometimes more unlikely acts entering the spotlight - often in unique venues. Back in 1995, MTV Invades Your Space served-up a chance for one lucky winner to play host - at their home - for shows like Singled Out, The Grind, and a performance by White Zombie. What's particularly interesting about the latter is that in a pre-show interview with Kennedy, Rob Zombie seemingly makes reference to a show I was at. "I like the Midwest," he says, "People know what it's all about out here. Breaking the seats and causing as much trouble and damage to every venue as possible so we can never come back again." Could this have been the infamous show at the Adler Theater in Davenport, Iowa from January of 1994? The one I wrote about here? Check out the 1995 MTV Invades Your Space performance, straight from a backyard in Indiana...

Here's a 'Monster' Spotify Playlist...

Written by

What makes a monster song? For many reasons, the title "Monster" is one that is often used by a host of artists that transcend genres. From Product of Hate's blistering metal single (for which I directed the music video), to Kanye West's legendary collaboration with Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and Bon Iver... from the pop stylings of Lady Gaga and Paramore to the folksy grooves of Mumford & Sons... and from the metallic crunch of Disturbed to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, countless artists have birthed their own "Monster." To celebrate this oddity is to enjoy it together, and I've curated a new Spotify Playlist featuring 23 distinct songs (nearly an hour and a half of music) that share just one similarity - the single-word title, "Monster." Stream it in the web player below, or click here to follow the playlist on Spotify.

Those hard-drinking pirates of Alestorm (Napalm Records labelmates with my boys, Product of Hate), have docked their tipsy ship near Orlando, Florida to begin recording their fifth full-length album. The announcement went up on Facebook earlier this week, but just hit my inbox here at HQ this evening, and thus I'm sharing a statement from the band below!

Green Day announce 'Revolution Radio' Summer Tour...

Written by

Grammy® Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Green Day today announced the Revolution Radio summer tour, kicking off on August 1st in Auburn, WA and hitting amphitheaters, stadiums, and arenas across the country. UK based band Catfish and the Bottlemen will support all dates. As part of the run, the band will also perform for the first time at Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. Dates and on-sale information for those shows will be revealed in the coming weeks. See below for a complete list of confirmed dates.

Fans on smartphones at concerts are a hot button issue for both artists and fans alike. On one hand, it can be seen as intrusive and taking away from the spontaneity of the live performance, but on the other - it can provide for a captured memory that may live forever on YouTube, and often serve as a snapshot of something historic. While the devices have changed, fan-filmed official videos are not a new thing. Beastie Boys made an entire (excellent) movie by putting cameras into the hands of their fans, and Metallica has been allowing filming since the Snakepit days of the Black Album tour cycle. Now it's Slipknot getting into the action, with an official, crowd-sourced music video. Check out "Before I Forget" Live at Red Rocks below...

This month, Japanese pop/rock band, ONE OK ROCK is set to hit North America hard with the U.S. release of Ambitions, their eighth album overall and first for Fueled By Ramen. Hitting the streets on January 13, the U.S. edition includes a track featuring Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low, while the Japanese version (out 1/11 via A-Sketch) features a duet with Avril Lavigne. Both versions feature Five Seconds of Summer making a guest appearance on the album closer, "Take What You Want." To celebrate the release, ONE OK ROCK will be performing a short, six-date North American Tour from 1/15-1/24. Check out music and dates below...

Last month, Disney Music Group released "The Human Race," a single by One Voice - a collaborative effort featuring Radio Disney Artist Jessie Chris alongside country music stars Kelsea Ballerini, Scotty McCreery, LOCASH, Mickey Guyton, Lindsay Ell and others. Issued under the Buena Vista Records banner, the single was paired with Radio Disney's 'Share the Joy' campaign, and a donation was made to City of Hope, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Toys for Tots, Feeding America, and Musicians on Call. Now comes a video for the track, one that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of "The Human Race."

It was one year ago today that Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister died (obit here), just four days past his 70th birthday. In the weeks that followed, many artists and bands paid tribute to a true rock and roll legend, and with the anniversary of his death now upon us, another round of tributes have arrived, with the surviving members of Motörhead encouraging fans to share their own with the #rememberingLemmy hashtag. One particular tribute that sticks out for me is one that comes from close to home - a performance of "Iron Fist" from my boys, Product of Hate. This video was captured during a hometown show celebrating the release of their Napalm Records debut, Buried in Violence, earlier this year. See it below...

This 1 in one hundred million spotlight is brought to you in partnership with Kronos.

When it comes to the world of drums and percussion, I am a novice, despite having been around them regularly for 25+ years both as a performer, and music video director. Fact is, I'm a guitarist, but one always mesmerized by drums and the accent pieces that add depth to the music, like the bright crash of a cymbal. Zildjian is iconic, and I have some of their cymbals right here at Rock Father HQ. Though I'm hardly a drummer, I do keep a five-piece kit on-hand for dabbling (and inspiring The Rock Daughters™), and that kit includes some Zildjian Cymbals. What many don't realize is that cymbal-making is a centuries-old art, and one that involves true craftsmanship, and an evolving understanding of what drummers are looking for. That's were folks like Paul Francis come in... a cymbal maker, and the Director of Research and Development for Zildjian.

It's been two years since Demon Hunter's The Extremist (reviewed here) became one of my favorite albums of 2014, a record that I deemed to be perfect across the board. With their next album, Outlive, scheduled for release in the Spring of 2017, the first taste has arrived with "Cold Winter Sun," a new single and lyric video that emerged this past Friday. Check it out...
