R.I.P. David Bowie (1947-2016)

Written by

Just two days following his birthday and the release of his critically-acclaimed new album, BLACKSTAR, the legendary DAVID BOWIE has died. The news came in just hours ago, with a message posted by his family to his facebook and twitter at 10:30pm on Sunday night. "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer," it read. "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief." While the various branches of his genre-bending career in music, film and art carry different significance for different people, for me it's always been about the music of Bowie. In fact, my very first Bowie memory is 1983's "Let's Dance," the title track from an album that spawned a video that stands among my first memories of being a 7-year-old kid watching MTV...

THE DANDY WARHOLS are kicking off 2016 with a new single called "You Are Killing Me," their first new music since 2012's THIS MACHINE, and their debut single for Dine Alone Records. The new track is streaming below, and can be made available on iTunes, Spotify and all the usual digital music emporiums this Friday, 1/8/16. While we await news of a new full-length album the Portland, Oregon rockers are touring on some International dates.

gnr125By now, you've no doubt seen the news that GUNS N' ROSES would be headlining the annual COACHELLA Music & Arts Festival - something 100% confirmed when all the related social media accounts posted the full lineup and GNR-centric artwork yesterday. What we didn't have was confirmation on exactly who would be in the 2016 GUNS N' ROSES lineup, and technically - we still don't know the entire thing. What we do know is that AXL ROSE, SLASH and DUFF McKAGAN are together again, and the official press release hit my inbox earlier this evening. Here's what they sent out...

This is a story very near and dear to my heart, as Wisconsin's PRODUCT OF HATE aren't just another random band that I'm covering here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine - they're my friends, and I've been working with them since 2009. Now, as their co-manager, I'm proud to announce a pair of special album release shows in celebration of BURIED IN VIOLENCE (iTunes | Amazon) their full-length debut, available February 5, 2016 via Napalm Records (distributed by Warner Bros/ADA in the U.S., Universal Music in Europe). These special performances will include a street date appearance at Livewire Lounge in Chicago, followed by a February 6th hometown show at 86 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Full details on each show, including ticket prices and support artists can be found below!

RIP Lemmy Kilmister of MOTÖRHEAD (1945-2015)

Written by

It's unfortunate timing, but yesterday afternoon while attending Christmas #5 at my wife's uncle's house, I was discussing my attendance at Chicago's Riot Fest this year, and the performance by MOTÖRHEAD. This led to a discussion about who was original in the band, and my words now haunt me - "It's Lemmy's band, so as long as he's there, it's MOTÖRHEAD. Once Lemmy's gone, so is the band." Lemmy died today, at home, of cancer - this bringing to an end a year in which Ian Fraser "Lemmy" Kilmister struggled with health issues while continuing to soldier on in the name of all things rock and roll. A statement from MOTÖRHEAD's management can be found below...

Music & ArtsGrowing up as a kid in the 80s, I distinctly remember visiting the music lab at Beacon Hill Elementary School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, learning basic notes on the Recorder, and hoping to one day enter a bigger realm of music. I was big into two artists at the time - Michael Jackson and Huey Lewis and the News - and, maybe it was the artists, maybe it was just the times, but I really wanted to learn the Saxophone. It was offered as an option for the school's band program, but citing the expense, I was not allowed to scratch my musical itch until much later. I was 15 when I bought my first Guitar - an NJ Series B.C. Rich Warlock... the same one that currently hangs here in my office, just feet from where I'm typing these words right now. It was that guitar, purchased with my own money from working at the local Hy-Vee Grocery Store in Davenport, Iowa, that truly opened the door to my life-long musical journey, accompanying me to many gigs throughout the 1990s and beyond. Now, as parents, my wife and I have been eager to support The Rock Daughters™ in their musical exploration starting practically at birth. In a time when arts programs are increasingly cut from school budgets, we're fortunate to have them in our schools, and the folks at Music & Arts exist to support that - offering families a place to buy instruments with confidence and world class service. With the Holiday Season upon us, it's the perfect time to look toward the Music & Arts Holiday Gift Guide (featuring HALESTORM's LZZY HALE and GREAT BIG WORLD) to pick a great gift for the budding player in your family. What would THE ROCK FATHER buy? Here's a few picks that I'm going to include in my own Holiday Wish Guide this year... we're making musical memories every day, perhaps it's time to make some of your own...

November 19, 2015: Tonight, Let me begin with a preface to a letter I wrote a few weeks ago from my hotel room in Berlin while on our final tour for this album. I felt the need to write this foreword in light of the heartbreaking tragedies of Nov. 13th, as this project has now taken on an entirely different tone. As has everything, it seems...

Music Video Debut: SPACE - "Strange World"

Written by

It was back in August that I posted about the latest resurgence of an old favourite of mine - UK-based SPACE. While "Strange World" was simply being announced as the new single at the time, it's out on November 13, and tonight I've got the video for you. "Strange World" is the title track for the next full-length album from SPACE, currently promised for an early 2016 release date. Check out the video...

If you're looking for some heavy tunes to spin this Halloween, look no further than Napalm Records' Heavy Halloween Playlist - just launched on YouTube and ready for your streaming and viewing pleasure. Packed with 32 of the "most brutal, bloody and creepy" videos from the Napalm Records roster, you'll find new music and classic tracks from the likes of POWERWOLF, HUNTRESS, MEGAHERZ, ALESTORM, MOONSPELL, and a band that's very near and dear to me... PRODUCT OF HATE. Toplining the Heavy Halloween Playlist is "Unholy Manipulator" - a video that I directed and edited. Originally created as a combination music video/short film while the band was still independent, it stars HELLRAISER's Ashley Laurence as the title character in a not-for-kids slash-fest produced by Robert Kurtzman (FROM DUSK 'TIL DAWN, WISHMASTER) and featuring the production and FX skills of his Creature Corps. The video was reissued with new audio and some updates via Bloody-Disgusting, and the single just hit iTunes. "Unholy Manipulator" appears on PRODUCT OF HATE's debut album, BURIED IN VIOLENCE, out February 5, 2016 via Napalm Records. Happy Halloween!

ANTHRAX is closing out the week with the surprise release of the first single and lyric video from their forthcoming new album. "Evil Twin" (available now on Amazon & iTunes) takes on the political and religious extremism of recent years, an old-school throwback that comes off as a thematic companion to songs such as Megadeth's "Holy Wars."

FAITH NO MORE might be my favorite band of all-time, but from SOL INVICTUS, their first album in 18 years, it has been a tad bit disappointing that all of the "music videos" released thus far have all been culled from live performances that can mostly be found in their entirety on YouTube already. Today that's changed, with the release of "Sunny Side Up," a concept video by filmmaker JOE LYNCH. Now, the thing is... the band isn't actually in it, and the last time they did a video like that ("I Started A Joke"), they split. That better not happen this time around...

When it comes to the true horror icons, few are in the same league as Freddy Krueger. Today's entry is actually the second time we've seen Robert Englund's signature character in this year's 31 Days of Halloween (see: PPW Toys' PopTaters), but this time we're focusing on the music of the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET franchise. This week, Varèse Sarabande released the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 8-CD box set, limited to just 2000 units. This deluxe package contains all 8 soundtracks from the original series, over 8 hours of music including almost 3 hours of bonus tracks. New artwork by Shawn Conn was commissioned for the set, and configuring the sleeves together forms a larger piece of art. Not to mess with history, the original artwork by Matthew Joseph Peak is still included in the packaging, with the entire set paying fitting tribute to the late Wes Craven, who died this past August. As a finishing touch, Freddy's trademark knitted sweater encases the entire collection.
