Watch & Listen: Icona Pop - "Brightside"

Written by

As a parent, my gauge of pop music has changed a little bit - largely impacted by The Rock Daughters' reaction to a new song. A few years back, Icona Pop hit that "kid radar" (and pretty much everyone else's) with "I Love It," a song that I distinctly recall a few preschoolers singing while swinging on the playground in the past. While they're new single, "Brightside," may not quite reach that same kid-crossover level of success, the new video just hit my inbox, and it comes ahead of a major performance on the horizon for the duo...

Covered: Wilson x Rage Against the Machine & Nazareth

Written by

I've seen Detroit's Wilson live a few times over the past couple of years (even took some photos once), and all I keep thinking is that we need to figure out a way to get them partnered up with my boys from Product of Hate for a tour. Different styles of rock and roll mayhem for sure, but I think there's some similar interests there that would make for some serious shenanigans. That said, today we've got audio streams for a pair of covers that Wilson has released - their take on Rage Against the Machine's "Sleep Now in the Fire," and the Nazareth classic, "Hair of the Dog." Check 'em out below, and if you dig 'em, buy 'em! Available on iTunes and the like...

On November 29, Korean Fire Drill will release their second full-length LP, More Bad Ass Than Half Ass, a follow-up to 2014's Half Ass is Bad Ass. With the new album boasting eight original songs, four covers, twelve skits and one secret track, the comedy metallers are serving-up a taste with their full video for "California Love" - a reimagining of the 1995 single by 2Pac featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman. Check it out...

Finnish country rockers STEVE 'N' SEAGULLS has been serving-up some pretty fantastic covers over the past few years, and today comes a new video for their take on Guns N' Roses' classic epic, "November Rain." The track comes from their latest album, Brothers In Farms - available now. It's a seasonally-appropriate song, right?

"The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby and the Range was a staple of my youth - a song that lit up the pop charts back in '86 (I was just 10 at the time) and became part of regular rotation on MTV and the like. Over the decades, it's taken on new life, Tupac's "Changes" being a prime example, and now, on its 30th anniversary, the song is reborn once more - still exceptionally timely, but this time performed by UK songstress Molly Warburton and her band. Check it out below, right here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine...

There have been plenty of orchestral covers of popular music over the years, from those "String Tribute" albums to variations performed by various smaller configurations, sometimes focusing on specific instruments, like cello. Today comes something bigger - a full orchestra comprised of "some of L.A.'s finest session players," tackling some iconic songs by the likes of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, TOOL, SYSTEM OF A DOWN and more. Metamorphestra is a brand-new orchestra, founded in 2016 by conductor Nick Proch, and they hit my radar thanks to a performance of SOAD's "Chop Suey!" that took place at Capitol Studios. The clip comes as the orchestra seeks to crowdfund their debut album via Kickstarter. Check out the incredibly cinematic reimagining below...

Fontainebleau Miami Beach is a fantastic hotel - and I say that from experience, as I've stayed there. Indeed, I've sipped a few pricey drinks from the bar, while staying in a room that was close to, if not the exact room that Tony Soprano once stayed in an episode of HBO's THE SOPRANOS. Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, SCARFACE and James Bond all have ties to the Fontainebleau, and for New Year's Eve, the legend will grow... and the property is offering up one exclusive, incredibly lavish experience in which guests can "indulge in the Miami Beach celebrity lifestyle with Justin Bieber, Skrillex and Marshmello." The news hit my inbox this afternoon, and if you've got $500K+ to spend on a five-night adventure, this is for you...

Track Preview: HELMET - "Life or Death"

Written by

With DEAD TO THE WORLD, the new album from HELMET, hitting the streets tomorrow via earMUSIC, it's a little odd that they chose to serve up a track preview today rather than offer a full track. Alas, that's what's happened, and being that HELMET has been one of my personal top five favorite bands of all-time since the 90s, my interest is piqued. Check out a sample of "Life or Death" below, then grab the album when it hits stores in the morning...

There's a few artists that I can count on to do no wrong, and Brian Setzer is among them. No matter what the configuration of the band, Setzer delivers, whether it be studio albums, live performances, or the many live albums and Blu-ray releases that have captured those tours for more to enjoy. On February 18, Setzer's ROCKABILLY RIOT! was captured on film for the first time at Namba Hatch in Osaka, Japan, a performance that encompasses songs from Setzer's acclaimed 2014 studio album Rockabilly Riot! All Original, alongside classic hits from his Stray Cats days, Brian Setzer Orchestra tunes and tracks from his solo albums. Today comes a performance clip via Rolling Stone in which Setzer and his band--Noah Levy (Drums), Kevin McKendree (Piano and Guitar) and Mark Winchester (Bass)--are tearing it up on the Stray Cats classic, "Rumble In Brighton." Check that out, along with "Drive Like Lightning (Crash Like Thunder)" below, and look for BRIAN SETZER'S ROCKABILLY RIOT: OSAKA ROCKA! - LIVE IN JAPAN when it hits Blu-ray, DVD and CD on November 4 via Surfdog Records.

Vampires. Werewolves. Frankenstein's monsters. Sounds like something I have experience with, but today that explains the inhabitants of a fictional, vibrantly-animated nightclub in "Roll Up," the new video from Los Angeles' FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS. The colorful clip featured adorable plush/stuffed creatures of the night having a fine time from the nightclub to the laundromat and beyond. It's today's entry into 31 Days of Halloween! Check it out...

Nope, you're not having deja vu, though I did say that exact same thing once before. You see, the Halloween season brings with it some perennial favorites, and over the stretch of some years and some past lives, I've had the good fortune to be a part of a few... one of which is PRODUCT OF HATE's UNHOLY MANIPULATOR. Whether you call it a "short film" or a "longform music video," it's a pretty special thing in that it paired the then-unsigned band with HELLRAISER's Ashley Laurence (who'd also appeared in Slipknot's "Snuff") and some big talent behind the camera (see below). And then there's the fact that yours truly handled directing/editing duties. The video gained a life of its own, eventually helping to secure the band a deal with Napalm Records, who issued PRODUCT OF HATE's debut album, BURIED IN VIOLENCE here in 2016. The video itself was originally released independently in 2012, reissued by Napalm for Halloween 2015, and now I'm featuring it in 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine once more! Evil monsters... wicked clowns... homages to RESERVOIR DOGS, FARGO, and THE WARRIORS... see it below!
