The past decade or so has been a rough one for STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. Guitarist Dean DeLeo, Bassist Robert DeLeo and Drummer Eric Kretz dealt with the increasingly erratic behavior of legendary frontman Scott Weiland, only to part ways and team-up with Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington. Then, all hopes for an original lineup reunion were crushed when Weiland died on tour with his solo band, with STP embarking on a search for a new frontman. Then Bennington died earlier this year, putting a particularly dark lineage on the vocal spot in the STP lineup. Now, after reviewing thousands of submissions and conducting in-person auditions, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS has emerged with a new singer... one from an unlikely place: Michigan. After making their refreshed live debut in Los Angeles this week, STP's first new music with frontman Jeff Gutt has arrived. Listen to "Meadow" below, and see if you agree with me that it's capturing the classic STP vibe while charging into a new era...

In Memoriam: SCOTT WEILAND (1967-2015)

It was January 30, 1993. I was the 16-year-old host of a cable access show in Davenport, Iowa called "ZTV," and there I stood in the cold with my friend Scott, awaiting someone to open the back doors of the Palmer Auditorium. Holding our video gear, we were at the Palmer with the purpose of my interviewing MEGADETH frontman Dave Mustaine as the band was then in the midst of their COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION Tour. The opening act was a little-known crew that hardly matched the metal of  Megadeth, but they had just hit the scene and were blowing up with a single and video called "Sex Type Thing" from their debut album, CORE. That band was STONE TEMPLE PILOTS.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS are hitting the road with new frontman, CHESTER BENNINGTON (LINKIN PARK). Billed as "Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington" (reminds me of the whole "Sublime with Rome" thing), the band will head out with FILTER in support. Additionally, the band has announced a new EP for this fall, to be released by the band's own label, with distribution through ADA. Back in 1993, I interviewed drummer Eric Kretz and guitarist Dean DeLeo at the Palmer Auditorium in Davenport, Iowa. The band was touring in support of CORE, while opening for MEGADETH. I need to unearth that video of a 16-year-old me rockin' it with those guys. I also have a great story about Scott Weiland from that night, along with some photos I shot on 35mm (my first time in a photo pit). We'll save all of that for another day, but in the meantime, check out the STP tour dates...

If you enjoyed The Random Rock columns when I was doing them for Kik Axe Music, then you'll be pleased to know that they'll be continuing here on The Rock Father™.  The concept is simple: There's just too much news for just one site to handle, so we compile bite-sized headlines on a few dozen bands and artists into one post. If you want to learn more, we'll tell you where to go. As the title implies, this really is random rock. Heavy metal, radio rock, punk, indie rock, ska, mainstrem, black metal, grindcore... if it's part of rock, then it's probably here, but you might find some other genres dropped in as well.

weilandxmasSTONE TEMPLE PILOTS frontman SCOTT WEILAND recently released a Christmas album, and there's quite a lot to say about it. Released for the 2011 Holiday season by Softdrive Records via Rhino, THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR is an interesting conversation piece that contains a couple decent renditions of classic tunes alongside some of the most... unique.
