STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS recently received five nominations for the 88th Academy Awards (airing live February 28 on ABC), and of them is rightfully in the category of visual FX. While the focus has been on the "real sets" and "practical effects" of the film, audiences might be surprised at just how much CGI was actually used... the key being that good CGI is undetectable. From large-scale set pieces that would've been impossible to build (crashed Star Destroyers on Jakku), to simple digital set extensions (the TIE Fighter bay - which would've been Matte Paintings in the old days), all the way to complex, fully-realized characters like Maz Kanata, the work was impressive. Now, a newly-released VFX breakdown released by I.A. Magazine reveals just how in-depth the work truly was. Take a look...

The Complete List of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Nominations are:
  • Film Editing – Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey
  • Original Score – John Williams
  • Visual Effects – Roger Guyett, Patrick Tubach, Neal Scanlan, and Chris Corbould
  • Sound Editing – Matthew Wood and David Acord
  • Sound Mixing – Andy Nelson, Christopher Scarabosio, and Stuart Wilson
