The Walt Disney Signature Collection has been bringing movie fans all-new editions of some of the biggest classics from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Launching with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast and Pinocchio have also received the Signature treatment, and the latest to appear is the 1942 classic, Bambi. We have a strange relationship with that film here in our house... quite simply, my wife won't watch it. Still, that didn't stop us from making that our second film in our latest run of Disney Movies Under the Stars in our backyard theater here at Rock Father HQ with the Bambi Anniversary Edition.

It was last year that something finally happened that I'd been hoping to do for a very long while... we finally put together a backyard theater here at Rock Father HQ. In partnership with Disney, we started an outdoor movie series right in our own backyard - and it was awesome. Movies are best enjoyed in a group, and while a great cinema experience is fantastic, there's something special about seeing a movie outdoors. Drive-in theaters are the best, and of course there's movies in the park - but now technology has caught up to the point where it's affordable for families to host some screenings at home. First up for our 2017 season? Disney's live-action reimagining of Beauty and the Beast!

Over the summer, we partnered with my friends at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment to put together something that I've always wanted to have here at Rock Father HQ: A Backyard Theater. The set-up was simple and relatively inexpensive (some items were provided for the project), and sans fighting the unpredictable and uncontrollable factors like weather (heat/storms) and bugs, having the ability to enjoy movies outside, with friends, and in our own backyard was a fun new way to bring people together. We screened some big ones, too - STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, ZOOTOPIA, and most recently, THE JUNGLE BOOK. Now that the kids are back in school and the cooler, fall nights are coming, we're not going to let the fun stop. In fact, I'm eyeing some new releases and old favorites for potential screenings this fall. In fact, shorter days make for earlier screenings, so I'm all for grabbing the blankets and cuddling up with the family.

Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK is a film that I've had a real connection with this year, having attended its red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, and getting a chance to sit down with Director Jon Favreau and much of the principal cast back in April. Promotional activities aside, it's a fantastic film that I love immensely, and one that I'd been looking forward to sharing with my own family after returning to Illinois. Favreau's direction from a screenplay by Justin Marks was able to hit all the right notes in such a dramatic way that I found myself moved in an unexpected manner. Visually stunning and with a real focus on family, it's one of 2016's best, and audiences certainly agree, propelling it to box office success well-beyond what anyone had predicted. Now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, we decided it was time for another movie night in the backyard here at Rock Father HQ, just as we've done with films such as ZOOTOPIA and STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS over the all-too-short summer break. Together with some good friends, it was time to turn our backyard into a Jungle...

Backyard Theaters are a trend that's been picking up steam in recent years, and for good reason: Families have really been taking advantage of ways to "take the indoors outdoors," and having your own movie screen in your backyard can be a crowning achievement. While the idea might seem complicated or expensive, it certainly can be, but it hardly has to be. With a little preparation, you can enjoy the communal cinematic experience of "Movies in the Park" or an old-school Drive-In right in the comfort and freedom of your own backyard. My friends at The Walt Disney Company asked if I'd be up for starting a backyard screening series right here at Rock Father HQ, and to be honest - it was something I was already looking into doing, so when they offered to provide some tools for the kick-off, those plans got rolling fast, with a screening to celebrate the home release of ZOOTOPIA in-mind. But first, I needed a trial run.
