Of the four styles of BBQ this country boasts, Texas BBQ is the most well-known. The famed pit barbeque creates smoked meats so flavorful that side dishes are secondary: one article in The New Yorker stated, "you don't hear a lot of people talking about the piquancy of a restaurant's sauce or the tastiness of its beans; discussions are what a scholar of the culture might call meat-driven."
When you have a product so good that it stands alone -- and is purchased by the pound, even in restaurants -- the urge to change or alter it in any way seems nonexistent. However, when you take into account the popularity of Tex-Mex, a combination of Mexican and southwest U.S. cuisines, the concept of a delicious food mishmash is too good to pass up.
This week, Nickelodeon served-up something new for its preschool audience, whisking kids away on some magical culinary adventures in Butterbean’s Café. The all-new CG-animated series made its debut on Monday during the Nick Jr. preschool block. Following a fairy named Butterbean and her adventures running her own neighborhood café and bakery, the series is something different - a culinary spin on a magical new world, and kids are already eating it up. While my own girls, The Rock Daughters™, are just a bit beyond the target demo, it's resonated with them, and the ratings show that they're not alone. Created by Robert Scull and Jonny Belt (Bubble Guppies), Butterbean’s Café is the biggest debut for Nick Jr. since Spin Master's PAW Patrol hit the scene back in 2013. Butterbean’s Café showcases creative cooking and features a curriculum with social-emotional lessons that highlight kindness and gratitude, and leadership skills. If your little ones haven't seen it yet, check out a preview of the 40-episode first season below...
The marriage of barbecue flavors and Mexican dishes is perhaps one of the most natural in our country. Cooking meat in big Texas smokers infuses them with incredibly delicious flavors, while the spices and complimentary sides in Mexican cuisine help bring out the meat's inherent smokiness. Dive into this ultimate fusion food by learning about what it is, where you can find it, and how to make your own.
A memorable backyard barbeque isn't complete without the smell of tangy barbeque sauce on the breeze, but A1 Steak Sauce had the genius idea of bringing it into your living room when they announced three new meat-inspired candle scents.
Just in time for Father's day, the sauce company released three limited edition candles on a special site inspired by the food their sauce improves: "Original Meat," "Backyard BBQ," and the elegantly put "Burger."
This Rock Father Kitchen feature has been brought to you in partnership with Pampered Chef.
As we close the book on 2016 and enter 2017, now is the perfect time to make a renewed commitment to cooking at home. Personally, I always avoid saying that anything is a "resolution," but I do like taking stock of things and refocusing for each new year. Eating at home is important, and like so many, we do stray the path, but always come back to teaching our children the joy and importance of making their own meals (and memories). The Kids' Cooking Set by Pampered Chef is a new addition to our kitchen, and one that embraces kids' seemingly natural love of two things: pizza and cookies.
