When it comes to television in 2016, retro vibes and nostalgia are powerful thing - a trend that's been gathering steam in recent years, often resulting in that perfect emotional mix that can find an updated property becoming cross-generational. As a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam, I've written about the subject at length, with the crew at Netflix leading the charge toward co-viewing and bringing families back together to enjoy the shared experience of something new... but rooted in something old. For the second time this year, I found myself face-to-face with familiar characters from my own youth, first with FULLER HOUSE, and now with something a little closer to my heart... VOLTRON. I'd been invited to DreamWorks Animation in Glendale, California for an early look at VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER, and a meeting with the talent and creatives behind the show. It was also a chance to get involved... if only for a moment.
Last week, I found myself in Glendale, California, reporting for duty at DreamWorks Animation on assignment for the Netflix #StreamTeam, all for a gig very near and dear to my heart... that of a kid that grew up in the 80s. Technically, I'm not allowed to tell you the specifics of what I was doing, but I don't think I'll get in too much trouble if I admit that yes, I have seen VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER... I just can't tell you anything about the Netflix Original Series other than that it's streaming on June 10, and today the first official trailer has been released. Whether you loved VOLTRON back in '84, or you're just getting involved, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the video below...
I'd like to think that I know a thing or two about VOLTRON, and as someone that holds the 1984 version of the property in high regard and has seen numerous reboots try (and fail) to make a splash, I feel confident that we're on the cusp of a new golden era for the familiar Lion Force. With the Netflix Original Series, DreamWorks' VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER streaming starting June 10, fans looking for new adventures will have a whole new chapter waiting for them in print: comic books from Lion Forge Comics - the folks who brought KNIGHT RIDER and MADBALLS into print. Releasing in July, the comic series expands the adventures of the paladins of Voltron with the first of a five-part series of VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER comics. The mini-series is the first of several planned expansions of new storylines between seasons.
VOLTRON is one of the sacred properties of my childhood, a mighty robot formed from five mechanical lions... a heroic beast who has been written about here in the virtual pages of THE ROCK FATHER Magazine on more than a few occasions. I was Voltron for Halloween back in '84 or '85, I had the toys, and still have a Voltron figure here in my office at HQ - one that the girls are frequently asking to play with. With the announcement of DreamWorks' VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER as a Netflix Original Series (complete with a new line of figures and vehicles from Playmates Toys), I was anxious to get a look at some footage, and this weekend that first-look arrived following a panel at WonderCon. Check out the first preview, "Forming A Legend..."
