As of today, kids can meet the ODD SQUAD and start getting a jump on those math skills. Previewed this past May at the PBS Annual Meeting in San Francisco (I was there) ODD SQUAD will premiere November 26 on PBS stations, but families can now enjoy six full-length 11-minute “Case Files” from the series, as well as many additional clips that include profiles of the agents, agent training videos, recruitment videos and more, are now available for free on pbskids.org, the PBS KIDS Video App, and PBS KIDS on Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast and Amazon Fire. In addition, two games and parent resources are now available on the series’ website.
PEG + CAT has been a fixture at Rock Father HQ even before it was released, my first experience with the math-based PBS KIDS series coming last May, when I met with creators Jennifer Oxley and Billy Aronson at the PBS Annual Meeting. Since that time, families have come to love PEG + CAT, and it was only a matter of time until this animated duo were given the proper musical treatment. PBS KIDS presents Peg and Cat's Really Big Album has just hit Amazon and iTunes (with a very BEATLES, Sgt. Pepper's-inspired cover), joining recent releases from DANIEL TIGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD in the PBS KIDS music library, and setting the stage for further releases in the months ahead.
My friends over at PBS KIDS just made a big announcement about a brand-new series from Sinking Ship Entertainment and The Fred Rogers Company. Created by Tim McKeon (Fosterʼs Home for Imaginary Friends, Adventure Time, The Electric Company) and Adam Peltzman (The Electric Company, The Backyardigans, Wallykazam!), ODD SQUAD is a live-action transmedia property geared toward helping kids ages 5-8 learn math. The series will focus on two young agents, Olive and Otto, who serve as part of the ODD SQUAD, solving cases that rank among the unusual. Within each case, a math concept will be presented.
Ever since I attended the PBS Annual Meeting in Miami this past May, I've been excited about the launch of PEG + CAT (premiering October 7 on PBS KIDS). A rarity in educational programming, it's a math show... with a female lead... that happens to play music. That's a trifecta of awesome for this music-slinging, daughter-raising Dad that was never too fond of math. I want my girls to dig the numeric subject, and PEG + CAT appears to be a piece to that puzzle. One early taste of that world is a book called THE CHICKEN PROBLEM (Random House) by series creators Jennifer Oxley and Billy Aronson, and to celebrate the show, PBS KIDS and The Rock Father are giving YOU a chance to win a copy for your little one(s)... along with some cool, PBS KIDS pencils!
PBS Digital Studios has a biweekly webseries by filmmaker/photographer David Friedman, called INVENTORS. This week, the subject is Mark Setteducati, a self-professed “mathe-magician” that uses mathematics and illusion in the toys and puzzles that he invents. Check out the full episode below, right here on The Rock Father.
