If you happened to catch the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, you may have seen Kylo Ren Adam Driver as a middle-aged dad getting his first taste of the massively-popular FORTNITE. Playing alongside a pair of 15-year-olds (Pete Davidson and Kyle Mooney), Driver proudly alerts the others that his 11-year-old son loves the game, but it's his first time jumping into the Battle Royale. My own confession: despite covering FORTNITE for ages, I just downloaded it to my Xbox One a few weeks ago, somehow getting the "Victory Royale" twice within my first few matches. Somewhat creepily, one of the kids in my squad said he was 9-years-old (same as my oldest daughter) as he asked me if I "know about building stuff." The kids may have their FORTNITE, but they're always amazed when I tear them up while playing Street Fighter II. Check out the sketch below!
Last month, while browsing the massive Funko booth at the 115th North American International Toy Fair in New York City, one of my favorite finds was the new line of SNL POP! Vinyl Figures. The first wave will bring forth characters from some classic sketches - from Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg doing "Dick in a Box" to Will Ferrell breaking out some "more cowbell" as Gene Frenkle, there's even Tom Hanks' recent cult icon, David S. Pumpkins. But out of all the characters being brought into plastic for the POP! series, there isn't one that's scene more airtime than Bill Hader's Stefon. Since Hader recently made his return to Saturday Night Live to host for the first time, Stefon returned with him, and that makes this the right time to let you know that if you're a fan, you probably need his POP! These are available for pre-order now via my affiliates at Entertainment Earth, and will be up soon on the official Funko Shop.
I've been meaning to post this one since the weekend, but while it may not be brand new, it's still worth checking out a time or two. Straight from the stage at 30 Rock, FOO FIGHTERS performed on Saturday Night Live, breaking out "The Sky is a Neighborhood" from their latest album, CONCRETE AND GOLD. But for their second performance, they veered off from the usual current-album-promoting format to do a little of their 1997 hit "Everlong," followed by a Christmas medley of Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" and Vince Guaraldi's "Linus and Lucy" from A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS. See the performance, and crank it up below!
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler may not be blood-born sisters but they do have an unbreakable bond, and their recent film, SISTERS, shows just that. With the film coming home on Blu-ray and DVD March 15th, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and THE ROCK FATHER Magazine have teamed-up to give readers a shot at winning SISTERS on Blu-ray Combo Pack, all while celebrating these "Queen Bees of Comedy" by taking a quick look back at some of their most iconic collaborations on the big screen, and the small one!
Two days ago, Tom Burns of 8-Bit Dad weighed in on the usual hard-to-find nature of female action figures by making an off-the-cuff remark about the future availability of toys from Director Paul Fieg's GHOSTBUSTERS. The new film starring Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones is out July 15 via Columbia Pictures/Sony, and from the looks of things, next month's annual Toy Fair International in New York City should have no shortage of GHOSTBUSTERS goodness. According to Fieg on twitter, pretty much all of the current licensees for classic GHOSTBUSTERS merch (based on the 1984 film and its 1989 sequel) are in the mix - LEGO, Diamond Select, Funko, and more - and will be producing over 20 figures in various sizes and styles. The first batch to be revealed? Mattel's 6" line of articulated figures. Take a look...
This week, most of my fellow PBS KIDS VIPs (Very Involved Parents) are in Austin, Texas attending the PBS Annual Meeting. While I had to miss this year's meeting, the news is still flowing, and today comes the full details on this Fall's next big hit, NATURE CAT! First reported here on THE ROCK FATHER back in January, NATURE CAT is a new series from creators David Rudman (“Cookie Monster” and “Baby Bear” on SESAME STREET; “Scooter” and “Janice” on THE MUPPETS) and Adam Rudman (TOM & JERRY, SESAME STREET, CYBERCHASE), that aims to encourage children ages 3-8 to explore and develop connections with the natural world. The series is now set to debut on November 25 on PBS KIDS (check local listings for times), and will feature a very familiar voice cast...
