As the old saying goes, "good things come to those who wait." Sometimes, it's like a movie - where STAR WARS (good) opens the door for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (great). The sequel trumps the earlier entry, and right now we're experiencing a similar phenomena here at Rock Father HQ in that I'm typing these virtual words to appear on your computer screen as the sequel to an entry that was posted over six months ago. Or was that entry a prequel to this post? Regardless, when it comes to gardening, patience is key - and when gardening with kids, a big payoff can make a huge impact in showing them that yes, we've grown something. Last Fall, Addie and I planted 200 bulbs that our friends at Longfield Gardens sent over, and today I can show you the end result!
It's been a decade since WINNIE THE POOH: SPRINGTIME WITH ROO was first released, and having missed it the first time around (five years Pre-Rock Father), I was anxious to check it out on "Hippity Hoppity Roo Edition" Blu-ray with my girls, both of whom have developed an affection for the characters of the Hundred Acre Wood. Just-released from the infamous Disney Vault (and for the first time in HD), SPRINGTIME WITH ROO is a surprising tale - but one that was unexpectedly... familiar.
Of all the things that the late Spring arrival here in Illinois has brought with it, one of the highlights has been the coming of new toys. We've all been infected with a bad case of Cabin Fever this year, and that's only been made worse by the fact that we've had certain things here in "the warehouse" at Rock Father HQ that we've been unable to use right away, thanks to snow. The BIG example? The Step2 Alpine Ridge Climber & Slide, a brand-new offering for 2014 that's being sold Exclusively at Toys "R" Us Stores. As a Step2 Brand Ambassador, my family gets to try out many of the coolest new toys that Step2 has to offer, and this one was at the top of the girls' list. With the snow finally gone, our Alpine Ridge is set-up and ready to rock.
The first Gardening success of 2014! While Spring is off to the slowest start that I can recall, and there's been a few signs of life beginning to sprout outside, our gardening adventures for the year got started back on February 8, with the arrival of an Amaryllis kit from our friends at Longfield Gardens. Now, if you're a newer reader of THE ROCK FATHER, one that's used to stopping by for your daily dose of pop culture, you might not know it, but Gardening is a HUGE part of our daily routine here at Rock Father HQ - generally from March to November, or whatever the weather here in Northern Illinois will allow. With something like an Amaryllis, starting a bulb inside is a great way to get kids involved with Gardening, by placing something that they can track the progress of every day.
Spring is finally here, and as the thunder rolls (remind you of Garth Brooks?) here at Rock Father HQ this morning, I just keep thinking of the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers." While we eagerly await the arrival of sunny days and some much-needed time in our garden, there's a couple of new DVDs that have been helping get the Spring vibe going with my little ones. CAILLOU'S GARDEN ADVENTURES (review here) and WILD KRATTS: BUGGING OUT, each bring nearly an hour of educational fun to families, with new collections of the PBS KIDS hit series'. Better yet, PBS Distribution and THE ROCK FATHER are getting five (5) lucky readers hooked up with a prize pack that includes both of these new collections!
As I sit here at 11:50pm on a Tuesday night, typing this from my office at Rock Father HQ, I look outside at the falling snow and can only wish for Spring. Knowing that it's coming, it's pleasant news to hear that THE BAD PLUS will release their version of Igor Stravinsky's THE RITE OF SPRING, performed as only THE BAD PLUS can - as an ambitious piano/bass/drums trio. Personally, I can't wait to hear what they do with it. Check out the cover art and tracklisting below...
