The media landscape is ever-changing, and when it comes to the big news of the day, the complicated relationships between some entertainment powerhouses just became even more tricky. In the interest of full disclosure, I'll say that I've cashed checks from both Netflix and Disney as an independent contractor over the years, and will continue to do so as often as I can. They're two of my favorite companies overall, and it's been rumored off-and-on for years that Disney would eventually make a play for Netflix (and maybe they still will down the line), but for now they're letting their new release streaming distribution contract with Netflix run out, opting to create their own "Disney-branded direct-to-consumer streaming service" in 2019, preceded by an ESPN-branded "multi-sport streaming service" in 2018.  The move comes as they take majority ownership in BAMTech, a streaming technology leader in which Disney had already purchased a 33% stake in last summer. For the consumer, there's gonna be a huge new player in the streaming mix.

Netflix Stream TeamThe Rock Father™ is a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam

Do you sneak time to stream your favorite movies and shows? According to new data from Netflix, you probably do. Sneaking a stream is nothing new - from husbands and wives catching up or jumping ahead on their favorite series' sans their significant others (I've done it), to jumping on while sitting on the throne (some of you may even be reading this while in the potty*), a sneak is part of daily life as a parent. In fact, while I like to stress the importance of "parents" vs. any kind of "mom" or "dad" thing, this month's Netflix revelation comes from the moms, and the #MomSneak is real. And yes, while I may be "The Rock Father," I don't think it's a secret that most of my friends and readers are women... so what say you about this? Seems like sneaking is the new binge, and the #1 sneak may surprise you...

Netflix: 10 Things to Stream During Winter Break

Netflix Stream TeamThe holiday season is almost behind us, but as we overlap the end of one year and the beginning of another, chances are the kids are on winter break and the drone of "I'm bored" just may be lurking.  It may not be lurking just for the kids, but also for the adults that care for them, and that's why when the time comes to settle in for some visual entertainment, one need look no further than Netflix. As part of my gig for the Netflix #StreamTeam, I'm always on the lookout for some interesting things - not just the obvious, but some "Rock Father Picks" that might be hidden a little deeper in the Netflix library. Here's a little of everything - perfect for streaming on winter break!

It took me ages to embrace Spotify as a streaming music service, but now I've turned the corner and have begun to love it for it's potential as a source of music discovery. While I still don't know how the long term will wind-up in terms of converting listeners into buyers, the depth of the library is intriguing, and something I can have a little fun with. Today I'm presenting to you my first-ever curated Spotify Playlist. THE ROCK FATHER presents COVERED is a 3 hour+ genre-spanning collection of hand-picked cover songs. I dig a good cover tune, (hence my "covered" features here on the site), and this is just the start. There's some great ones out there, and this first playlist features 53 tracks including some from FAR, ANBERLIN, FAITH NO MORE, METALLICA, GUNS N' ROSES, JANET DEVLIN, DINOSAUR JR., A LOSS FOR WORDS, ELECTRIC SIX and more. I even snuck in my boys, PRODUCT OF HATE, throwing down their heavy version of OZZY OSBOURNE's "Perry Mason." Check it out below...

Netflix Stream TeamIt's true... I have seen the first season of FULLER HOUSE, the new Netflix Original Series that continues the adventures of the Tanner family (and friends) nearly three decades after FULL HOUSE first premiered on ABC, and two decades after it came to a close. The popularity of the series has only continued in what could now be considered to be a really, really long hiatus - and on February 26, the script is flipped as D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) and Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) take center stage - all grown-up and raising kids of their own. Earlier today, the first official trailer arrived via ELLEN, and now it's been shared by Netflix. Check it out below, and look for more about FULLER HOUSE right here on THE ROCK FATHER Magazine in the weeks ahead. I'll be bringing it to you as a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam...
