After being less-than-impressed with the "sneak preview" of the new NBC comedy, GUYS WITH KIDS earlier this month, I was reluctant to give the show another shot. Somehow or another, my DVR decided to record the second episode of the show as it made it's way into NBC's new Wednesday Night lineup for it's "official" premiere this week, so I decided to check it out. Sadly, the second serving was worse than the first.
PBS Kids' Sprout is hands-down, the #1 network for regular viewing here in The Rock Father household. My three-year-old demands it, and if Caillou and Sesame Street weren't enough, The Goodnight Show and The Sunny Side Up Show bookend the day with programming goodness. As for the latter, Chica is the star attraction, and this Fall she's getting her own show. As a tease, Sprout has released a parody of NBC's THE VOICE in which Chica and friends face some tough judges. Get ready for THE SQUEAK...
Last night, NBC got their Fall Season started a little early with sneak-peeks at the pilot episodes of two new comedies, THE NEW NORMAL (not about being a Dad, but using an oft-used term for "Stay at home Dads" as it's title) and the Dad-centric, GUYS WITH KIDS. I'm not a big sitcom guy, and while I skipped 'Normal, I had GUYS WITH KIDS set to record on the DVR for later viewing, lured by it's subject matter and Jimmy Fallon's involvement in the series. After viewing it this afternoon, I can confidently say that GUYS WITH KIDS will be a big hit... but not with guys with kids.
As someone that has never been able to get into and enjoy any of the countless Trading Card Games that have been released over the past few decades, I was a bit skeptical when The Hub asked me to check out their new series, KAIJUDO: RISE OF THE DUEL MASTERS, a loose ''re-imagination'' of the long-running DUEL MASTERS card game by Wizards of the Coast. After a mysterious package arrived here at Rock Father HQ earlier this week, my daughter and I sat down to immerse ourselves in the world of KAIJUDO via the first two episodes.

When I first heard about BEING ELMO: A PUPPETEER'S JOURNEY, it was after it wowed audiences and took home a Special Jury Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. This exceptionally moving documentary by Constance Marks tells the story of Kevin Clash, the man behind Elmo, SESAME STREET's most recognizable little red monster. Much to my surprise, the film popped up on Netflix Instant this week, so the little one and I sat down to watch it yesterday.
As a child of the 1980's, a trip to SHOWBIZ PIZZA PLACE was an event - a momentous occasion that was saved for birthday celebrations and other rare gatherings that warranted more than a simple meal. The Matteson, Illinois, ShowBiz was the one that I'd occasionally be treated to (along with the short-lived, similarly-themed, CELEBRATION STATION in Park Forest, IL), and what made the trip even better was the fact that ShowBiz was conveniently located directly next door to TOYS R US.
Being a child of the 80's, the idea of a ''family movie night'' has been something of a distant memory for awhile. All of the major networks at some point featured movies during prime time, and as cable and new media took over, the idea of watching a flick ''live'' on TV kind of went away - as did the gathering aspect for a lot of families. Despite the often negative perceptions toward corporate sponsorships and product placement, Walmart and P&G (Procter & Gamble) have been making an attempt to rekindle the spirit with their own FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT series.

Released theatrically in 3-D this past July, Disney's G-FORCE was met with lukewarm critical reviews despite positive audience reaction and a box office take of over $119M (falling short of it's estimated $150M budget). There's not a lot you can say about a film in which CGI Guinea Pigs fight the forces of evil alongside live-action human counterparts to sell it upon an adult audience without realizing that adults aren't the audience. It's a film distinctly aimed at kids.
