Earlier this year, the folks behind Joe's Pub on Weed St in Chicago planted a flag in the suburbs by opening Joe's Live at the MB Financial Park in Rosemont, Illinois. An immediate hit with a mix of pop, country and party bands, this Fall finds the venue entering completely new territory, albeit a realm that I personally have been covering here on the site for the past six years: the Kindie Scene. Kids Shows at Joe's will take place on select Saturday mornings at 11am, beginning September 24th with an appearance by Randy Kaplan. Future dates have been booked into December with what should be some familiar names to readers of THE ROCK FATHER Magazine, including Poochamungus and Miss Jamie From the Farm. Check out the initial lineup below...
This is probably the first time this has ever happened - a past entry into 31 Days of Halloween returning three years later in a different form. Back in 2012, I featured "Bah Humbug Halloween" by Chicago's POOCHAMUNGAS here on the site, but what it didn't have then, it has now - a music video. In this tale inspired by Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Ebenezer Scrooge is found living in Chicago, bringing his grumpiness the the #1 Holiday of the year (aside from Xmas, of course). Can the ghosts right his wrongs for this one, too?
"They’re part of the subject matter, have helped with songs and song titles and are my best critics," says POOCHAMUNGAS frontman JOHN JOYCE about his 9-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. The self-proclaimed "stay-at-home Firefighter Dad" wears many hats, flipping between his duties as a "Rock Father" and those of the Chicago Fire Department, where he's worked for nearly two decades. Now, ahead of Rock Father's Day 2014, it's just been announced that John is preparing to take the stage at Lollapalooza, a newly-minted member of the "Chicago Kindie All Stars," who will perform on the growing Kidzapalooza bill.
Earlier today, Chicago Firefighter John Joyce (a friend of mine, and this site) made an appearance on Chicago's Very Own WGN TV as their "Firehouse Chef of the Week." John isn't just a Firefighter and fine cook - he's also the frontman of POOCHAMUNGAS, a kindie rock band that hopefully you've heard me talk about... and if not, go grab their new album, BLOCK PARTY, right now! Check out John's appearance below, along with his recipe for some tasty turkey chili... which oddly enough, isn't far off from what we make here at Rock Father HQ. Chicago style!
On March 4, BAND TOGETHER: A CHICAGO KINDIE MUSIC SAMPLER will be released, bringing together for the very first time, eight Windy City Kindie artists to benefit INTONATION MUSIC WORKSHOP - an organization that "empowers children to become rock stars on every stage of life through innovative music education." Following it's release via CD Baby and Bandcamp, a BAND TOGETHER Live Concert event will take place on Saturday, March 8 at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. Tickets for the 3pm show can be purchased via this link.
Alright, friends... I get pretty excited when I share news like this. You see, I've actually had (on quite a few occasions) people contact me thinking that THE ROCK FATHER is a New York-based website. The reason? Particularly in Brooklyn, there's been a sort of Kindie-rock explosion taking place these past few years, and thus I cover a lot of artists and news that have an East Coast connection. REALITY: I'm Third Coast... from The Second City, and THE ROCK FATHER carries the Chicago flag high, representing The Land of Lincoln on a Global scale. This is the 52nd article on the site to mention the word "Chicago" within it's text, and today I'm bringing you news of a Chicago-based Kindie-rock band... POOCHAMUNGUS. On September 17, POOCHAMUNGAS will release their sophomore album, BLOCK PARTY!
