Three years ago, PBS KIDS ROCKS! was released as a 15-track collection of tunes for the whole family. Now, PBS KIDS ROCKS! has been reissued as an expanded, 28-track collection featuring songs from Grammy Award-winners Old Crow Medicine Show, Ozomatli, Los Lobos, They Might Be Giants, The Weepies, Best Coast and two-time Parent’s Choice Gold Award-winner SteveSongs, known as Mr. Steve on PBS KIDS. Available now on Amazon and iTunes, each of the songs helps kids explore topics related to literacy, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and social-emotional learning. Bilingual tunes are also included. Check out some streams and info below!
It's National Fire Prevention Week (Oct 5-11, 2014), and this year a couple of familiar names have teamed-up with the National Fire Protection Association to help spread the word about safety to the kids. RECESS MONKEY and PBS KIDS regular Mr. Steve (SteveSongs) have contributed songs, videos and dance moves to Sparky's Schoolhouse, the educational home of Sparky the Fire Dog. There's printable activities, resources for educators, free downloads and more, all available via this link. Want some jams right now? Check out a couple of videos below, right here on THE ROCK FATHER!
I have a problem with RECESS. No, not the music contained on the new album from Chicago's JUSTIN ROBERTS, but with use of the word "recess." It just might be the most-overused word in the Kindie Rock realm right now... so much so that it's fast-approaching the same level of annoyance that I have for the word "amazing." RECESS is not only the title of Roberts' new album (and a song on the album), but then we have the band RECESS MONKEY... a company called RECESS MUSIC... the opening track on MR STEVE's recent STEVESONGS album was "Recess Rocks," you get the idea. And that's not counting the mainstream music world, where MUSE has a song called "Recess," and then in the hip-hop realm, MISTAH F.A.B. has THE RECESS. Yep, "recess" has officially joined songs with "stinky" and variations on "Five Little Monkeys" (I've heard 666 of those this year alone) as something that really grinds my gears like Peter Griffin. Recess is over. So how about that new Justin Roberts album?
Mr. Steve (aka Steve Roslonek of SteveSongs fame) has long been a staple of PBS KIDS, so it was no surprise that he made an appearance at the 2013 PBS Annual Meeting at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach last week. What was a surprise, however, is that he performed a special song that incorporated the names of blogs written by the PBS KIDS VIP (Very Involved Parent) Ambassadors - which I, The Rock Father, am a part of. Check out the informal video below, along with lyrics that I've hopefully transcribed correctly.
When I heard that SteveSongs was releasing a free holiday single called "Our World," I immediately thought (and hoped) that it would be a cover of the song from EMMET OTTER'S JUGBAND CHRISTMAS. It is not... but it's still worth getting! SteveSongs' "Our World" is available as a Free Download now through December 31 via this link.
I missed out on KindieFest this year, and being one of the newer folks that covers Kindie Rock, I can't say that I'm 100% familiar with everyone in this video. That said, 17 Kindie Artists, 1 Hotel Room is a fun watch, and I think you'll agree. Filmed at the recent festival and uploaded onto the Ralph's World YouTube Channel tonight, the video can be seen below:
