For the third year in a row, the folks behind the annual Fids & Kamily Music Awards (a play on The Village Voice's long-running "Pazz & Jop") have either graciously or foolishly invited me to take a seat on the panel of judges to determine the Top 10 best albums of the year in the kids and kamily music realm. I, alongside other journalists, writers, bloggers, producers, radio personalities and folks associated with the family music scene, must listen to dozens of albums, and then figure out what's the best of the best. Each judge has to nominate and score 10 albums of their own, and a formula is then applied to choose the ranking. This year was exceptionally difficult, as there's been some really great albums (alongside some stinkers), and choosing just 10 is tricky enough without having more than 10 favorites. Today, we announce the winners of the 2014 Fids & Kamily Music Awards (the 9th Annual), as revealed this morning on the Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child radio show...

31 Days of Halloween: JAZZY ASH - "Monsters"

Written by

Way back in February, I'd already locked-down an entry for 2014's 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER when I reviewed HOME, the latest album from JAZZY ASH. "Monsters" follows the New Orleans flavor of HOME, presenting a playful take on what exactly "monsters" are. Is that a zombie, or just a shadow? Is that some sinister creature in the corner, or just a pile of laundry? Is that the demon tree from POLTERGEIST outside? Nope, just your neighbor's weeping willow. Stream the track below, or grab it on iTunes as a fine addition to your 2014 Halloween Music Playlist!

I've gotta say, 2014 has been pretty light on the new music for Halloween... but that doesn't mean that there aren't a few worthy new additions to your 2014 Halloween Music Playlist! One such entry comes courtesy of the ever-busy and ever-awesome MISTA COOKIE JAR AND THE CHOCOLATE CHIPS, presenting a surf-tastic little number that manages to recall THE MUNSTERS, while serving up a colorful little animated video to go along with it. "Halloween Every Night" should be your jam right now, and it easily slides in here for 31 Days of Halloween on THE ROCK FATHER. Check out the video below...

FPW2014It's National Fire Prevention Week (Oct 5-11, 2014), and this year a couple of familiar names have teamed-up with the National Fire Protection Association to help spread the word about safety to the kids. RECESS MONKEY and PBS KIDS regular Mr. Steve (SteveSongs) have contributed songs, videos and dance moves to Sparky's Schoolhouse, the educational home of Sparky the Fire Dog. There's printable activities, resources for educators, free downloads and more, all available via this link. Want some jams right now? Check out a couple of videos below, right here on THE ROCK FATHER!

There's a lot of legit rockers making great music for the whole family these days, and that makes for some exciting options for listeners young and old. You've got members of Harvey Danger and Velocity Girl in THE NOT-ITS!; CASPAR BABYPANTS is really just Chris Ballew from The Presidents of The United States of America; Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo writes music for DOC McSTUFFINS; fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff wrote music for SUPER WHY!; and the list goes on. Now comes THE SQUEEGEES, a Los Angeles-based band with a couple of high-profile members in Pierre de Reeder (RILO KILEY) and Chris Phillips (SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS), who together with Samantha Tobey (a former "Mommy & Me" music teacher) and crew are gearing-up for the release of their second album of kindie jams, VEGGIE SOUP. Check out their new video, "I Can I Can" below...

TALES FROM THE MONSTROSITY SCROLLS by San Francisco's RAINBOW BEAST & THE ROCK BAND LAND ROCKERS secured it's place as one of my favorite family albums of 2014 even before this year actually began. In fact, it was just shy of a year ago that the February release first entered my ears, and in the time since, the catalog of Rainbow Beast has only grown - fueled by the imaginations of the children who attend the Rock Band Land camps and classes that are presented by the San Fran "creativity school." While monsters and other supernatural creatures have infiltrated the music of Rainbow Beast many times in the past, one recent entry has risen forth to snag a space in the 2014 edition of 31 Days of Halloween here on THE ROCK FATHER. Feast your ears upon "The Ghosts of the Sea" and consider it as a worthy addition to your Halloween Music Playlist this year...

It is officially National Talk Like A Pirate Day here at Rock Father HQ (though I probably will not be talking like a pirate), so I'm gonna share a couple of sea-worthy goodies for all of you, starting with "Pirate Girls" - the new single and music video from THE BOO HOO CREW. Clint Perry and the crew have been cranking the family-friendly Pirate rock for a few years now, so it's just right that they're back with more for 2014. Check out the video below...

The lullaby album of the year has officially hit the streets (and the nursery) as TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE ROCK STAR - LULLABY VERSIONS OF FAITH NO MORE (my favorite band of all-time) is out now. To celebrate this epic collection of 12 FNM classics (and one cover) that have been re-worked into "lush instrumental versions" for baby, the folks at Roma Music Group have teamed-up with THE ROCK FATHER for a giveaway! Three (3) lucky readers will receive a digital download of the new album, with one (1) also receiving a $25 Amazon Gift Card! Enter below...

Video Premiere: DANI - "Beauty Land"

Written by

It was just about a year ago when BEAUTY LAND, the fairy tale-inspired debut album from DANI first hit my radar. It’s a little Disney, a little pop-rock, and a lot of fun - a record that mixes styles and is one of a rare few releases of late that successfully pulls off any form of narration. On the title track, the storytelling begins immediately, with Dani laying the somber groundwork for her tale, just before opening into a country-tinged anthem filled with "purple waterfalls and unicorns." Now comes a music video for the track, helmed by Phil Dornfeld (producer of SCARY MOVIE 3, 4, and 5). I'm pleased to debut it this morning, right here on THE ROCK FATHER...

Miss Jamie from the FarmReady for a rootin' tootin', yet rockin' good time with your little ones? I'm teaming-up with my friend MISS JAMIE FROM THE FARM for a Fall Giveaway! We're going to get three (3) lucky readers set-up with copies of her debut album, MISS JAMIE'S FARM (available at AmazoniTunes & CD Baby) - a collection of "New Tunes and Farm Favorites" that are perfect for kids preschool to age 7.

Check out the details below, and enter to win your copy, right here on THE ROCK FATHER!

Music cruises or "floating festivals" are all the rage these days, with 70,000 TONS OF METAL, SHIPROCKED, THE WEEZER CRUISE, THE COUNTRY MUSIC CRUISE, BLUES ALIVE AT SEA, and several more genre and artist-specific cruises having hit the open waters over the past few years. Now comes one for the family music crowd with the just-announced MACARONI AND CRUISE, setting sail August 3-7, 2015.

Over the past few years, I've covered a lot of lullaby tributes to popular artists here on THE ROCK FATHER, but tonight is really special as I'm getting to break the news on what is undoubtedly the lullaby album of the year - Twinkle Twinkle Little Rock Star: LULLABY VERSIONS OF FAITH NO MORE. Set for release on September 16th (pre-order on iTunes), the crew over at Roma Music Group have reworked a dozen FNM classics into nursery-friendly instrumental jams for baby.  This is an exceptionally exciting release for me, as it's my favorite band of all-time getting the lullaby treatment. Check out the lullaby version of "Falling to Pieces" below, right here on THE ROCK FATHER...
