If my math is correct, next year will mark the 30th Anniversary of BARBIE AND THE ROCKERS, a line of fashion dolls released by Mattel in 1985 as a direct response to Hasbro's JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS. "Who came first?" has always been something of debate and folklore over the years, but the general story is that when Mattel found out that Jem was on the way, all of a sudden, Barbie had a band. Growing up in the 1980s, we had both bands in our house, but I tend to remember The Rockers having the better toys at the time (though JEM had the awesome show). I, playing as "Derek," spent a lot of time jammin' out with my sister as we enjoyed her "Hot Rockin' Stage" playset. Turns out, my wife and her sister had one, too. Long-gone like most of our now-prized childhood possessions, something interesting happened last month... when my oldest daughter found a brand-new Hot Rockin' Stage awaiting her under the Christmas tree. BARBIE AND THE ROCKERS hadn't just resurfaced in 2013, but were awaiting a "rebirth" of sorts right here at Rock Father HQ for 2014.
The recent partnership between Mattel and MEGA Bloks has given kids (and grownups) some new ways to play with characters and vehicles from iconic brands like HOT WHEELS and BARBIE. From the latter collection comes the MEGA Bloks Barbie Build 'N Play Super Star Stage, a new entry for Fall 2013 that features 290 pieces, and the addition of lights and sound. The MEGA Bloks crew sent one of these sets here for review in The Rock Father's State-of-the-Art Toy Testing Facility (in this case, the dining room table) and my oldest daughter, Addie, couldn't have been more excited. It's Barbie. It's Building. It's a Stage for ROCK. Before it was even out-of-the-box, the right ingredients seemed to be present. But how is it for real?
The floodgates are really open for merchandise based on the classic, 1966 BATMAN television series now that the rights have been released and assigned to licensors. NECA has a nice piece coming out soon, and the assortment of action figures coming to MattyCollector looks phenomenal. Now comes the BARBIE COLLECTOR DOLLS for BATMAN and CATWOMAN. Both went up for pre-order today at Entertainment Earth, and full details can be found below.

Barbie - The Princess & The Popstar by Mattel
This Fall, my oldest daughter finally started getting into the world of Barbie. Growing up in a musical household, it's not surprising that she gravitated toward the recent PRINCESS & THE POPSTAR line of toys, along with the companion film (now on DVD). While she only has two Barbie dolls right now (both from this line), her collection will be expanding come Christmas morning. We've got some plans to jump-start her Barbie horizons with more items from this series and beyond.
