Now this is cool. On October 13 at 12pm ET/PT, Nickelodeon will introduce children viewers to the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) with the hour-long premiere of the brand-new, interactive animated series, BLAZE AND THE MONSTER MACHINES. Touted as "the first preschool show on TV to comprehensively cover all areas of STEM in every episode," BLAZE AND THE MONSTER MACHINES follows a monster truck named Blaze and his eight-year-old driver AJ. Figure in a nine-year-old little girl named Gabby that serves as head mechanic, and you can count me in for my little monster truck-loving girls as the series explores the physics of how things move - tackling problems through scientific inquiry and mathematics, while discovering the parts needed to make everyday technologies work. PBS KIDS VIP (Very Involved Parent)When PEG + CAT first landed on my radar back in May of 2013, I was attending the PBS Annual Meeting in Miami, where series creators Jennifer Oxley and Billy Aronson were on-hand to discuss their creation. With two daughters, the thought of a math-based series with a little girl as the lead was a compelling idea, and the fact that she wields a string-based instrument was a bonus. A year-and-a-half later, PEG + CAT is a true hit - a dual EMMY-winner that's watched regularly here at Rock Father HQ, with Peg's little ukulele-driven jingles a regular earworm. With the release of Chickens on the Loose and other REALLY Big Problems on DVD, the learning adventures are available at any time.

nickdoraappThe folks over at Nickelodeon have just launched a new DORA & FRIENDS Preschool App on iOS based on their new series, DORA & FRIENDS: INTO THE CITY. In this new adventure, kids can choose from ten locations from the series, including the Arco Iris Cafe, the magical cave and the beach; dozens of props like cameras, microphones and blankets; and several Latin-influenced musical tracks from the series to help bring the scene of their own creation to life. Users also can create up to four customized friends and select different hairstyles, facial features, outfits and even names, as well as record their own voices which can be incorporated into the story. In searching my own website, I was a little surprised to find that I've only mentioned DOC McSTUFFINS in 28 articles. While that might seem like a lot, I thought it would've been more, and if you follow me on social media (which I sure hope you do), you'd know why: I've spoken of Doc a lot. Out of the top five shows that my girls enjoy, there is perhaps no other that's been so all-encompassing. They've seen it on television, DVD, and on-demand... they have an ever-expanding collection of Doc McStuffins toys... and each of my daughters (ages 2 and 5) have multiple pieces of Doc clothing. It's a transmedia home-run, and one I don't mind at all. To think that it took this long for a breakthrough show like this to happen - one that not only features a "Doctor" at the forefront, but a female... and one of color - it's hard to imagine, particularly given how big a phenomenon it's become. With DOC McSTUFFINS: SCHOOL OF MEDICINE out on DVD this week, it's only appropriate that I'm throwing down some more virtual ink about the show...

51FXc2r3QbLEarlier this summer, Silver Dolphin Books and Skyreader Media teamed-up to launch a new series of Apps based on the popular TOTALLY MONSTER and PRETEND AND PLAY series' of board books for children under 5. While the Apps are available now as e-Books for the Apple iPad, we haven't experienced those since I've been maintaining my Apple-less stance and use none of their products aside from iTunes. But, news of their existence made a prime time for my little ones and I to take a peek at a couple of the books (TOTALLY MONSTER: BEST FRIENDS, and PRETEND AND PLAY: ON THE FARM), sent to Rock Father HQ by the folks at Silver Dolphin. They were well-received by my girls (particularly TOTALLY MONSTER), and make for some fun reading...
