This Friday, audiences will witness the release of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon's TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, the fifth big-screen adventure for the TMNT gang, and the latest reimagining of the popular franchise. When the turtles hit the big screen the first time around, I was there. I had the t-shirt... the soundtrack... but for some reason, never the toys. Over the years, the folks at Playmates Toys have done a fantastic job of of innovating and expanding upon the line, holding the "master license" since the very beginning, and producing action figures and accessories that I've always dug. Now, as a parent, I can enjoy the 'Turtles with my daughters, and yes - we're getting into those wonderful toys! #TMNTweek here on THE ROCK FATHER is a celebration of all-things TMNT, with new posts each day leading up to the release of the film, and we'll kick it off with a Hero Vs. Villain Giveaway - your chance to WIN Master Splinter and the The Shredder from Playmates' new line of Movie Action Figures!
I'm gonna spin things back a bit... to the Spring of 1990, to be precise. There was a monumental moment in cinema for this kid named Me - the arrival of four, teenage... mutant... ninja... turtles... who hit theater screens for the very first time. I had a promotional t-shirt from the first TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES film that I practically wore out, and now 24 years later, the TMNT are back on the big-screen again for their fifth feature film (perhaps their most dramatic reimagining) - I'm a parent now, and my oldest daughter and the boy next door swear to me that the Turtles live beneath the manhole cover out front. Times change, but one constant? Playmates Toys - "the creative force behind the successful Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy line over the last three decades," and this summer they're unleashing a new product line inspired by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies’ upcoming TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (out August 8). Check out what's hitting the toy aisles very soon.
Now this is a tough one. I have these four friends from New York City - Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello - that I met for the first time back in the late 80s. We've had some good times, some great adventures, and yes, we shared more pizza than we probably should have. Problem is, they sorta went away for a little bit, making a retreat back into the shadows only to emerge every few years for another big adventure, often facing off against the same metal-faced samurai over-and-over-again. You see, they're ninjas... and they're turtles. Now they've got another adventure, and they need our help. They're trying to get into the NATIONAL TOY HALL OF FAME.
