Nostalgia is a serious thing right now, and when it's done right, the way to move forward into the future is by providing a link to the past. From 20th Century Fox, the PREDATOR franchise is being rebooted, and in this first trailer audiences are getting a look at a very different movie than the ones that have preceded it. THE PREDATOR finds a suburban boy unknowingly luring the intergalactic hunters back to earth in a scene that takes me right back to a simpler time - a realm of imagination and wonder much like that seen in films like the Goonies or Monster Squad. The latter was a 1987 collaboration between Shane Black and Fred Dekker, and for THE PREDATOR they're working together again, co-writing the screenplay and with Black (Lethal Weapon) at the helm. Take a look...

Angry Birds has evolved... and you might even say that it just got weird. Rovio, the creator of the legendary Angry Birds, has just launched Angry Birds Evolution - a completely new spin on the game. Along with eastern-style RPG mechanics and promising "console quality graphics" on mobile, the birds are completely reimagined and redesigned to collect, train, and evolve... you could even say that "these birds are not to be flocked with." Rovio, in co-operation with Chimera Entertainment, have created over 100 new birds with multiple evolution states (some look suspiciously familiar to certain 80s action legends and comic book heroes). The dastardly pigs in never ending fauna swine conflict are led by the evil(ish) Don Bacon, who plans to turn the idyllic Bird Island into a hotel chain. Check out the launch trailer and a character featurette that looks quite PREDATOR...

It seems that every day is [INSERT NAME HERE] DAY, and today is a day that I can get behind... #AlienDay! Indeed, today is a global celebration of the franchise launched with the 1979 release of Ridley Scott's Alien, and continuing on May 19 with the release of his latest film, Alien: Covenant. Now comes some news from my friends at PPW Toys that they're bringing the famed Xenomorph into an all-new form... that of Mr. Potato Head. But the Alien won't be alone, as Predator (or is that, Pred-tater?) will be in the PopTater mix as well, allowing toy fans of all ages to have a mighty Alien vs. Predator battle to see who ends up fried. Additionally, Ripley and the crew are also getting a set of Wooden Nesting Dolls as well! Check these out...

TeeFuryWhat do PREDATOR, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, THE WALKING DEAD, Slimer from GHOSTBUSTERS, THE EVIL DEAD, the Minions of DESPICABLE ME, Jack Skellington from THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, Freddy Krueger from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, Pennywise the Dancing Clown from Stephen King's IT, the Death Eaters from HARRY POTTER, the guys from SHAUN OF THE DEAD, and The Headless Horseman of SLEEPY HOLLOW have in common? Well, aside from all being pretty cool on their own, all of these icons of the spooky season have become the subjects of limited-edition pop culture mashups from my friends at TeeFury. For a limited time (through 10/17/2014) TeeFury is offering these spook-tacular t-shirts for men, women and children for just $15 each as The Halloween Collection.

We're gonna file this one under "Toys for Grownups," because these action figures aren't for the kids. In fact, while I tend to open the few figures I occasionally happen to buy, these would probably never be opened as they're 2014 made to look like... the 80s. I'm talking about the new ReAction Figures line from Funko and Super7, a collection that I'd been meaning to feature here on THE ROCK FATHER for ages, and now feel beyond obligated to - they're just that cool. What if BACK TO THE FUTURE and GOONIES had figures made by Kenner way back when? What if the Universal Monsters got in on the action, along with other Horror icons, or characters from PULP FICTION, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, or the famed players from Joss Whedon's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL and FIREFLY? The answer has arrived, and ReAction might be the hottest thing going this year for old-school pop culture aficionados like myself.
