Kylo RenWhen the September 4th #ForceFriday onslaught of new product tie-ins to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS arrived, the offerings went far beyond the realm of the usual toys and games. For nearly four decades, the STAR WARS name has been emblazoned upon countless items in practically every category one can think of, and in recent years, housewares has been a big one. In our kitchen here at Rock Father HQ you can find THE STAR WARS COOKBOOK: WOOKIEE COOKIES AND OTHER GALACTIC RECIPES, an R2-D2 Measuring Cup Set, C-3PO mugs, and even small cups for the kids. With a new movie comes the opportunity for some new styles, and the folks at Tervis are delivering just that with a new collection of their signature Hot/Cold Tumblers, each bearing imagery from THE FORCE AWAKENS.

The December 18 release of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is fast-approaching, and it was "Force Friday" that ushered-in a new era of STAR WARS toys and collectibles. Over the past two years, Mattel has been releasing an ever-expanding and impressive fleet of STAR WARS vehicles - from "Character Cars" to screen-accurate Starships, from limited-edition high-end collectibles to retailer-exclusive rides that are simply "inspired by" the Saga we all know and love. Today I'm sharing the latter by giving readers of THE ROCK FATHER Magazine a shot at winning one (1) complete set of 2015 Hot Wheels STAR WARS Faction Series Vehicles by Mattel! There's eight vehicles in all, each packaged in matching artwork inspired by a Faction from a galaxy far, far away. Check this out...

Facebook has just rolled out 360 Video in their newsfeed (like THE ROCK FATHER so that I show up in your newsfeed, cool?), and publishers including STAR WARSDiscoveryGoProLeBron James & Uninterrupted, NBC's Saturday Night Live and Vice are on-board for the day one launch. In the case of STAR WARS, fans can get a 360° view of Jakku from the back of Rey's speeder - straight from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. You're probably gonna have to watch this one a few times, as there's some additional characters, creatures, and even another speeder (one that Hasbro already released as a toy) that show up in the immersive, minute-long clip. Take a look...

Holiday Wish GuideWhen "Force Friday" arrived on September 4th, families couldn't wait to get their hands on some of the latest STAR WARS toys, many of which are inspired by or based upon J.J. Abrams' forthcoming STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (opening December 18). With mostly radio silence leading into release day, many had questions about some of the more unique, and in some cases higher-dollar toys that had arrived on-shelves - things well beyond the usual realm of action figures. Spin Master jumped into a galaxy far, far away with a host of new items - their first run as a STAR WARS licensee. From their Air Hogs line came two of the most talked-about - a Millennium Falcon Quad, and a Remote Control X-Wing Starfighter. With both of those having been sent to Rock Father HQ for review, we've spent some time with them and are ready to file a report. Up first is the X-Wing Fighter that's unmistakably based on Luke Skywalker's "Red Five" from 1977's STAR WARS: EPISODE IV - A NEW HOPE.

My friend Sam dropped a link on my Facebook page this afternoon with something quite unexpected - a new STAR WARS fan film called SUMMER '78. Directed by J.C. Reifenberg, this 3½-minute gem captures childhood for many, myself included. The backyard movies... those Kenner action figures... the required Super 8mm camera. Funny enough, those same elements that landed me in a Target commercial for the new toys from THE FORCE AWAKENS (something tells me that's gonna keep coming up for a bit). Thing is, this is an Easter-egg laden short that needs to be seen to be fully appreciated by a certain audience... one largely made up of kids that lived this the first time, and are sensing that "awakening" right now. Take a peek...

Earlier this week, FedEx delivered to me a package that was at some point adulterated in transit between NYC and Rock Father HQ in Illinois. The clear cylinder was open at both ends, and inside were a pair of posters that appeared to have been removed... as if someone decided to sneak a peek at what was inside. What was missing were two caps - one red, one black - each representing opposite ends of a spectrum, one dark, one light. The note included presented me with a choice - perhaps the most difficult that I've had to make in ages: #ChooseLightSide or #ChooseDarkSide? Yes, this moment was being dictated by Hasbro - a toymaker placing me in a position to potentially go against the wishes of my family in order to fulfill a destiny and declare allegiance to either The First Order (remnants of The Galactic Empire) or The Resistance (what was spawned of The Rebellion) when it comes to shipments of toys from J.J. Abrams' forthcoming film, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. My daughters made it quite clear what choice they wished me to make - "Choose the light side, Daddy!" But I don't think that I can...
