Canada’s EATEN BY SHARKS has unleashed its new album, The Undertow of Hate, via CDN Records. Normally, I’d avoid a band with this kind of name like the plague, but sharks are involved, and they’re my favorite fish.
Let’s see what we’ve got, shall we?
The record opens strongly enough with “Vessels Torn,” which pairs screeching vocals with some jackhammer drumming. “In Tidal Chaos” follows, and while it’s good, it didn’t move the needle much for me.
Next up is “Capsized,” which goes all to hell and gone and was definitely a favorite from the first listen. “Bodies Overboard” falls into the same category, with a strong metalcore influence running through it. Vocalist Matt Sherriff really sank his teeth into this one.
“Dragged Under” sounds exactly like I imagine a real-life shark attack would feel. I really dug this one! “Becoming Chum” comes in with enough force to knock down a building or two, while “Crimson Tide” starts with a moody edge before taking your head off.
All told, EATEN BY SHARKS did an OK job with this record. There are some strong moments, but the whole thing never quite reached thrilling territory for me. Still, it’ll be interesting to see what these guys do next.
