Good food is everywhere. Finding the good stuff without torching the monthly budget is another story.
Ahead of World Food Day on Oct. 16, WalletHub ranked more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities to determine where food lovers can find the strongest combination of flavor, variety, and value.
Miami claimed the top spot for 2026, followed by Portland, Oregon; San Francisco; Seattle; and Austin.
The personal-finance company compared cities across 28 metrics, including grocery costs, access to highly rated restaurants, specialty food stores, food festivals, farmers markets, and other measures tied to eating both in and out of the house.
“In the best foodie cities, including Miami, FL, Portland, OR, and San Francisco, CA, there are tons of unique culinary experiences to try, from food trucks to specialty-food stores to, in some cities, Michelin-starred restaurants,” says WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo.
Miami stood out for its concentration of restaurants and access to highly rated, affordable dining. WalletHub also pointed to the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants, farmers’ markets, butcher shops, specialty food stores, and kitchen supply shops.
Elsewhere in the data, St. Louis had the highest concentration of gourmet specialty food stores among the cities studied, while Orlando led in ice cream and frozen yogurt shops. Portland, Maine, had the highest ratio of full-service restaurants to fast-food establishments.
Experts contributing to the report also pointed to a few dining trends gaining ground in 2026, including earlier meals, midweek dining, smaller portions, reduced alcohol consumption, mocktails, and a stronger interest in restaurants that reflect local culture.
For budget-conscious diners, the advice was familiar but useful: hunt for lunch specials, happy hours, prix fixe menus, restaurant weeks, food trucks, and neighborhood spots.
In other words, eating well still requires a little strategy.
