QUICKSAND has a new record on deck, a new single in the wild, and a North American tour ready to roll.
The New York post-hardcore trio will release Bring On The Psychics on July 17 via Equal Vision Records, marking the band’s first album in five years and its debut for the label. Before the full record lands, QUICKSAND has shared “Cool Guy,” a sharp new track that pulls from old-school hardcore energy while pushing the band’s sound into its next phase.
“’Cool Guy’ is like an OG HC diss track, like ‘Small Man, Big Mouth’ by Minor Threat or ‘Hypocrite’ by Negative Approach,” the band said. “Sometimes you just gotta get those negative emotions out.”
The track arrives with a new video directed and produced by Jesse Korman.
Produced and mixed by Jon Markson across 10 days, Bring On The Psychics finds guitarist/vocalist Walter Schreifels, bassist/vocalist Sergio Vega, and drummer Alan Cage building a bridge between the band’s ’90s foundation and its more exploratory modern era. The album follows Interiors and Distant Populations, both of which helped extend QUICKSAND’s story long after its initial run yielded post-hardcore landmarks Slip and Manic Compression.
Schreifels says the new record pulls from the same emotional and philosophical fuel that powered some of his earliest work.
“For this album, I was going back to a lot of my earlier influences about ‘break down the walls’ or ‘start today,’” he says. “Regardless of whether you’re into hardcore or youth crew, they’re really cool records because they’re speaking to the time and providing possible paths to a better future … with mosh parts. That’s the energy that I wanted to bring to this.”
QUICKSAND will take the new material on the road this summer with BANE and SOUL BLIND, launching the North American run Aug. 3 in Norfolk, Virginia, and wrapping Sept. 3 in Boston. Before that, the band heads overseas for European dates and festival appearances, including Graspop Metal Meeting, Jera On Air, and Outbreak Festival.
“I’m really psyched to play these songs live,” Schreifels says. “I feel really fortunate to still be playing music with these guys and be able to take it to different places.”
More than three decades after helping shape post-hardcore’s vocabulary, QUICKSAND keeps finding new pressure points. “Cool Guy” hits fast, Bring On The Psychics lands next, and the road waits right behind it.
