Oh, the late-1990s were such a strange place, indeed. In 1997, the same year I met the girl who would eventually become my wife and the mother of my children, the Coca-Cola Company unleashed their citrus-tinged SURGE as a competitor to reigning “extreme” beverage, PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew. The commercials were the epitome of late 90s culture – embracing a mix of the “Nu-Metal” look and extreme sports lifestyle (including cross-promo with WCW Nitro) while bearing a soundtrack featuring artists like Fatboy Slim. I drank more than a few cans and bottles of SURGE in that time, but by 2003, SURGE was done. Now, thanks to a grassroots effort known as the SURGE Movement, the beverage is back – available in a first-of-its-kind deal, exclusively through Amazon.

Here’s what the makers have to say about it: The same great taste from the 1990s is back, now in a larger 16-ounce can. SURGE is the bolder citrus soda that fuels a familiar rush from back in the day.
The announcement was made official via Facebook earlier this morning, with the following video:

Now, I know it doesn’t fit the “original” vibe of SURGE, but in 2014, I’m a loyalist to PepsiCo’s “zero calorie” Diet MTN Dew, and I’d be up for trying SURGE if there was a “diet” option available, but at 230 calories per can with high fructose corn syrup in the mix, I think I’m gonna keep my 1997 nostalgia trip limited to viewings of the Harrison Ford classic AIR FORCE ONE, and constant plays of FAITH NO MORE’s ALBUM OF THE YEAR (which I do anyway).
I tend to think my daily workouts are still burning off some of the SURGE from 15 years ago.
SURGE Ingredients:
- carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, citric acid, natural flavors, orange juice concentrate, potassium benzoate (to protect taste), potassium citrate, caffeine, calcium disodium edta (to protect taste), yellow 5, yellow 6, carob bean gum, blue 1.
