As Aerosmith once said, we’re “Back in the Saddle” again when it comes to new rides from Toy State (I’m one of their “Test Drivers”). With Spring here, the new models are hitting the streets, and this month brings the first vehicles that Toy State has created in partnership with Mattel under the Hot Wheels brand. One of the most exciting lines to be featured is the “Extreme Action” collection, a subset of three unique Hot Wheels that have been given a larger size, and infused with light, sound, music, and motorized functions. Included in the first wave are SCORPEDO, the SHARK CRUISER, and the iconic STREET CREEPER. The latter just arrived here for review in our State-of-the-Art Toy Testing Facility (our house and neighborhood), and here’s the lowdown…
The Original Street Creeper first hit the streets in 2012 as a 1:64 scale diecast “mainline” Hot Wheels car, and it’s that version that Toy State used as the basis for it’s Extreme Action Model. As with most popular Hot Wheels, the 1:64 diecast has been reissued, most recently in a blue version that we have here at Rock Father HQ and have used to show you the difference in scale.
For the Extreme Action Street Creeper, the detailing is impressive for a vehicle that carries an MSRP of just $12.99 (though online retailers seem to be going quite a bit above that right now, as is often the case with new-to-market, potentially “collectible” vehicles). Lots of chrome, with spiderweb hubcaps, eight wiggly “legs,” a skull on the engine block (with illuminated red eyes), rubber tires, and three buttons, each with their own set of functions. This is a Hot Rod that looks like something THE MUNSTERS would’ve been driving.
