For those that caught the Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump last week, many were wondering just who the hell ANTHONY JESELNIK was when he was first introduced as one of the comics on the dais. After a devastating performance that included a slam on JERSEY SHORE “star” Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino” having AIDS, one thing was made crystal clear: Anthony Jeselnik is one funny motherf’r.
With renewed attention on the comic, this gives me an opportunity to circle back around to an album that I missed the chance to review upon it’s release last Fall. Jeselnik’s SHAKESPEARE was released digitally in September of 2010 via Comedy Central, and it’s one of the best – if not the best – comedy records of the past year.
His persona is that of an arrogant asshole. Straight-forward, calm, and assertive, he’s mean in a very likable fashion. Imagine a more upscale, prep-version of a young Andrew Dice Clay, and you’re headed down the right path. He’s knows that he’s golden, and he’ll tell you.
“That is a great joke.” he says, just two minutes into the set. “Here’s another one,” he continues.
As with many “overnight” success stories, Jeselnik’s material is new to most, but he’s been working it for several years – perfecting each bit for assassin-like timing and precision. If you want to laugh and you’re not a moron, head over to iTunes and grab a copy of SHAKESPEARE right now.
