Definitely from the ‘Games for Dad’ Department… not family-friendly…

When my review copy of the latest CALL OF DUTY game arrived here at Rock Father HQ last month (a day after the release), I couldn’t wait to jump into it. Rather than rush through the game just to crank out a quick review, I wanted to ”live” it for a bit and really get some true feelings for the game. After all, this is the third to bear the MODERN WARFARE name, and having experienced both WORLD AT WAR and BLACK OPS since the first MW hit the streets, the bar had been set pretty high. So what do I think of CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 3?

codpackforreviewTouted as having a story that picks up where MW2 left off, I hate to say it – but that really doesn’t matter. I’m sure the developers and the most hardcore of players appreciate the continuity, but as a casual gamer myself, I’m really just interested in having fun with good gameplay in the modern environment. In that, MW3 delivers in a campaign mode that seasoned players will undoubtedly rip right through. The graphics look great and it’s fun, but not groundbreaking.

As with any COD title, the online multiplayer is where the most time will be spent, and MW3 is no exception. What’s a bit disappointing is that there’s really a feeling of “more of the same” at this point. They’ve made a few tweaks here and there, but the big picture is that the multiplayer action feels a lot like the games that came before it with some new maps – to the point where I was actually craving the excitement brought on while playing the first MW game. It also seems like a lot of the weapons are vastly underpowered this time around, and hopefully an update will address that in the near future.

I’m starting to feel that the CALL OF DUTY franchise is like a drug of some kind. It’s addictive, you love it, but the “high” gets smaller with each dose. That said, MODERN WARFARE 3 is still a lot of fun, but here’s hoping that the next installment can bring some sort of innovation back to the franchise to reinvigorate the magic.

The Rock Father Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars.
