Earlier this morning, visitors to the ShopDisney website (an affiliate) started seeing an advertisement for something interesting on the “New” page. Disney Store’s TOYBOX action figures are touted as making their debut in-store and online on Friday, November 3, 2017. “Get ready to interact with PIXAR, Star Wars and Marvel characters like never before,” it says. With no formal announcement yet, what’s particularly notable is that the two figures featured are of Rey and a First Order Stormtrooper from Star Wars: The Last Jedi… but that they’re styled almost exactly like their video game counterparts where in the long-shuttered Disney Infinity. Here at our house, the figures from that game are still in-use, and just yesterday our youngest daughter was playing with the Star Wars ones. There’s a huge appeal in those designs.
While Disney Infinity was crushed by a perfect storm of many elements, the stationary figures (tiny statues, really) were gorgeous. Many were collecting those by themselves as the design and production qualities were absolutely excellent. Here, our girls have never stopped using them, regularly bringing them into rotation among their other, more articulated toys.
Also interesting is the TOYBOX name. In-game, the TOYBOX was an open-world place where characters from many franchises could interact – the concept being that it was a digital equivalent to a child’s toy box, where all playthings would intermingle. Of course, Disney has THE TOY BOX running on ABC as a competition series, but this certainly looks like the folks at Disney Consumer Products have been inspired to make physical toys based on a video game element that itself was inspired by classic, hands-on play.
Stay tuned for more details as I have them…
UPDATES:
-Former Disney Infinity head John Vignocchi weighed in via Twitter that the assets that the Disney Infinity team created have, indeed been repurposed:
No. They took the stuff the team created, re-engineered them to be articulated toys, and then launched under the name “Toy Box”.

There is also a video via Infiniteer Adventures that discusses these…
